Project: Take part in the valorization of a historic site at the heart of idyllic mountain landscapes! Join us and come discover l’Abbaye de Clausonne and its natural environment at 1140 meters of altitude!
It is in the XII century that the Abbaye took shape. After multiple periods of deconstruction and reconstruction over the centuries, it became in the 20th an agricultural building, which was abandoned in the 1950s. It is in 1994 that the Abbaye of Clausonne association was created to conserve the vestiges of this exceptional architecture on an exceptional site. Since then, the association has wanted to make this place a ground of discovery, learning and knowledge.

Work: This year, we will continue to work on the stone masonry of the old sheepfold, in order to make of it in a few years, a room for cooking, storing tools, etc. We will also continue to work on the development of the site. All this, with the help of masons who will be there to transmit their knowledge! You will work 30 hours per week. Evenings and weekends are free for activities that you will choose to organize together.

Leisure activities: You will be in an exceptional setting to discover the pleasures of mountain hiking, its rivers, its lakes, the farmers and producers’ markets, the festive nights organized in surrounding villages. In group, you will decide activities and discovery outings that you wish to set up. The reception center usually organizes one musical evening per week with homemade wood-fired pizzas.

Location: The Abbey of Clausonne, 5km from the village of Le Saix (05400), is 15km away from the Veynes. Once or twice a week, we organise with our vehicles some racing trips!

Closest train station : Veynes Dévoluy (05400). The meeting time is generally between 4pm and 6pm at the station.

Closest airports : Marseille or Lyon

Accommodation and food: You will be accommodated in individual tents on the Faï farm site. Dry toilets, a kitchen and showers will be available. A barnum will be set up and will be your common space under cover. There is no Wi-Fi, but you will meet people from all over the world! This center is a 30 minutes’ walk from the Abbey.
You will cook by turn, so that we can taste several specialties! Here, we are careful about what we eat and aim to reduce our impact on the planet. We try to eat a maximum of local products and we eat meat twice a week.
The daily life is organized together: organization of the menus (vegetarian, vegan and other specific diets possible), shopping, activities, etc. Bring a mattress, a good sleeping bag (the nights can be cold) and a pillow. To be adapted to your needs.

Today, only the remnants of this 12th century building are found as the abbey was destroyed, burnt, rebuilt and finally used as a farm and school in the 19th century. Clausonne remains, however, a remarkable site, sharing the beauty of the wildness that surrounds it: situated in the heart of a vast «circus» of mountains, the abbey became the route point for numerous hikers that visit the Haute vallée of Maraize. Thus, rather than letting the vegetation once again cover the ruins of Clausonne, 20 years ago, the inhabitants of Saix founded an association in order to highlight and maintain this site. Progressively, thanks to numerous international workcamps that have worked there, this place lives again and is currently open from April to October.

Work: In 2018, the work will concern the accessibility of the site and its visibility for hikers. You will highlight the vestiges of the pit by clearing and securing existing walls. You will make a path in the abbey's vestige and will discover the technical creation of a pebble way. You will also participate in the preservation of the carved stone.

In dorms you will share with 3 to 8 people at the Faï farm. You will share this place with other volunteers from others workcamps. You will take care of the collective life (preparation of menus and meals with local products, cleaning…)

In the evenings, at the Ferme du Faï, you will be able to organise games, international meals and project movies. During the workcamp, touristic outings to discover the towns and villages of the region may also be organized.

You will highlight the ruins of the abbey's mill and will realize a flooded pasage through the Maraize. You will make a path in the abbey's ruins and discover the technical creation of a calade path. You will participate in the preservation of the carved stone. A final phase will emphasize a former barn from the abbey in which will be set up a technical room.
