The islands which border the Atlantic coast were, during the last centuries the barrier that protected the French coastline. From those islands, the Island of Aix, small pedestrian island in the Atlantic is a place steeped in history. For several years, the Island of Aix has been josting international projects as part of the restoration of Fort Liédot.To continue the conservation acrions and actions to conserve and restore the island’s heritage, while promoting its dynamism and local development, a partnership between the Ile d'Aix municipality, Solidarités Jeunesses and the Conservatoire du littoral has been set up.

You will participate on this site in the restoration of the large west stone shooting range, which faces Fort Liédot. The works will consist of de-vegetating the site in order to start masonry work and traditional stone cutting on rubble walls. You will have the mission to cut and replace the stones then to de-grout and regrout the wall, in hydraulic heat.

Location: In the middle of the sea, 20 km of Rochefort-under Sea; Charente Maritime.

Leisure activities: In the Island of Aix, you can profit out of numerous nautical activities as the fish and the sailing with the local clubs. The beach, the bike rides bordering the sea, beach volleyball and other pleasures are to be discovered. You can also visit forts and museums as well as certain cities such as La Rochelle and Rochefort. The time dedicated to leisure activities promote the meeting with inhabitants who wait for you with impatience!

Collective in shared rooms (4 beds) at the Armand Falliéres housing center, near Fort Liedot. The food and meals will be prepared, in a rotation of roles.

Project: The Aix Island (Ile d'Aix in French) is a small pedestrian island located in the North Atlantic ocean. Marked by an eventful maritime past, this island contains lots of places steeped in history, especially the Fort Liedot, which was built by Vauban and classified as a historical monument. This town is a loyal partner of the association Solidarités Jeunesses. In fact, for several years now, l'île d'Aix has hosted international workcamps.

Work: You will work on the restoration of the large west stone shooting site, which faces the Fort Liédot. The work will consist in de -vegetating the site in order to start traditional masonry work on rubble walls, to replace the stones, to jog and rejoin with hydraulic lime.

In group, indoors, on the island. Meals will be prepared by kitchen teams, in turns.

Leisure activities: You will take part to so many activities this year in l'Île d'Aix! You will have the chance to set up and host the “Islanders Festival”, and to enjoy all the activities it has to offer: concerts, shows, bass bands, local produce markets, exhibitions, and film projections. You could also practice your skills in some aquatic activities, like fishing or sailing, with the local clubs. During your free time, you will also have the opportunity to interact with local residents that are eager to meet you. Finally, you will have time to discover the beach, to go on bike rides along the sea, to play beach-volleyball, and to participate in many other activities. You could also go and visit the villages like La Rochelle or Rochefort.

Project: Do you wish to be immersed in deep nature and to participate in the development of fruit-growing heritage? Come to join us to discover the orchards of Charance! This 220 hectares area has been awarded "Outstanding Gardens" by the French Ministry of Culture. You will also discover the arboretum and the agricultural eco-museum. Launched in 1984 by the Botanical Conservatory of Gap-Charance, the orchards were abandoned in 2004 due to a lack of political and financial will. In 2016, the Alpine Society for the Protection of Nature, decided to take up the challenge of their rehabilitation. More than 4,000 trees and 1,500 varieties of apples and pears can be found there.

Work: You will be in charge of "reviving" one of the many plots of orchards in the area. Fir, brambles and other offshoots have now invaded the entire plot. With the help of hand tools, you will clear and then take care of the trees which are without leaves or fruits.

Closest airports: Marseille Provence and Lyon Saint Exupéry

You will be accommodated in collective rooms, near Gap. With the help of the workcamp leaders, you will participate in the collective life (household, dishes ...), but also, in turns, you will prepare the meals from the local products.

Leisure activities: You will get to spend some time with the inhabitants of the city and you will have the opportunity to participate in local events, including a concert organized on the Charance area. During free time, you can discover the small villages around and enjoy surround nature for hiking and sports activities. Also it is possible visit the tourist city Gap, but also visiting of the region can be organized.
