Project and work:
Come and experience a unique project in Avricourt, in the heart of Picardy! Join us in restoring the charming church of Avricourt, a true local heritage gem that withstood the challenges of World War I. Building on the work of previous teams, you’ll help renovate the church’s interior.
On the agenda: traditional masonry, joint repairs, pillar restoration, and plasterwork. And there’s more! Depending on your skills and interests, surprises await you throughout this exciting project.
Partner:
The village of Avricourt is a historical partner of ours. With just 500 residents, this small community goes above and beyond to warmly welcome volunteers: shared meals, dinner invitations, homemade jam, and fresh vegetables from the garden are just part of the tradition here.
Plenty of interactions await you! Together with the support of the animation team, you’ll also have the opportunity to organize events and activities for the villagers and the local school children.
Location and leisure:
Avricourt is located 15 km away from Noyon, in the North of Oise. In a central location in Picardie, you can visit Amiens, its cathedral and its “hortillonnages” (floating gardens), Compiegne and its imperial palace, Noyon and its historical centre. You can also hike in the surrounding countryside among cereal fields and small pasture valleys. If you are a nature lover, you could even discover the educational beehive with the school children and the beehives of a small local producer. A concert given by the local band in the church is planned the day before the departure.
Meeting point:
The meeting point is scheduled at NOYON train station at the end of the afternoon on August 29. The exact meeting time will be given with the infosheet which will be sent at least 4 weeks before the start of the workcamp.
From PARIS, you can take a train from PARIS - Gare Du Nord train station, regular departures are scheduled throughout the day (one train per hour). It is roughly a one-hour journey.
The trains are open to booking about 4 months before the departure dates, accessible on the following website: https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/
If you are coming first by plane, remember that you will need some time to commute from the airport to the train station, therefore we recommend that you arrive early enough for you not to rush and have a stress-free journey.
Closest Airports:
Paris Airports (Paris-Beauvais, CDG, Orly)
Accommodation and meals:
You will have the village hall at your disposal as a place to live, which includes a well-equipped kitchen (community oven, dishwasher, big fridge etc.). Individual tents will be provided as well as a fallback solution in the village hall in case of bad weather. Please note that only one shower and one toilet will be available on site. The group will be sharing the cleaning chores and preparing meals together. A budget will be allocated to the group leader and you will participate in the grocery shopping and in the preparation of meals, prioritising healthy products from local producers.
English, French
Important to know:
Please bring work clothes for the construction site and tight shoes. Don’t forget your sleeping bag as well as a floor mat for more comfort.
You can also bring with you specialties from your country, photos, music instruments, in short what you like and want to share on this site, either with the local population or with the group!
EU citizens must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Our association works in an inland rural area of one of the smallest and unknown regions of the South of Italy: Basilicata. Genzano is a small village based on agricultural tradition, where youth either emigrate and do not return, or remain there but without many social activities. We have been putting many efforts to promote little local events and projects since 2003. Many changes happened and we are observing, after the pandemic, a return of the local youth community to public participation. As an organization we try to launch projects that enhance the sense of belonging and preserve the strong identity, promote social inclusion and participation. Still, we struggle to find opportunities to promote their stronger security as individuals part of the society. The volunteering activity remains far from the majority of them in most cases. So we thought that bringing such an international possibility, open up to people showing interest for our little community, and invest their time in a local project, could produce a cascade effect. Beside that, we wish this could be an opportunity for volunteers to get to know a part of Italy that really preserves its own identity and traditions, and has a great nature and history.APS Spaziogiovani operates in the local context with cultural and social promotion activities. It is involved in the implementation of leisure activities for the local community: manual workshops, creative recycling, social gardening, cultural events, among other projects promoted over the years. The NGO has always been focused on the inclusion of people who are disadvantaged in some way or have different abilities. As such, we encourage their regular participation in the project activities we support. The project will certainly be carried out with the patronage and support of the Municipality and in collaboration with some other local associations with which we already work on a daily basis: sport activities, Folkloric Group, Pro-Traditions Committee, Band Complex, Social Cooperatives, among others.
Description of work:
Volunteers will support socio-educational workshops and leisure activities during summer camps/educational workshops for the wider community. The activities will take place mainly in the mornings (from 9.00 to 12.30) and some afternoons for coordination and planning activities (max. 3 afternoon meetings of 2 hours). This year s summer camp of September will work on the summer learning loss, by using a game-based methodology. It tackles transversal themes as environmental issues, upcycling, knowledge of nature. International and local volunteers will work on thematic daily workshops, to explore in a playful way contents connected to school curriculum. Then they will also work on artistic and transversal skills.
Description of location and leisure:
Excursions are planned in the local area with local families who will host the volunteers for lunch and dinner, as well as language and cultural exchange evenings with the young people involved in the association. Some relevant locations nearby are Matera, Castello di Monteserico, Acerenza, the Park of Small Lucanian Dolomites, and lots of landscapes.

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Open Houses. is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation and revitalisation of historic buildings through volunteer-driven initiatives. It emerged from grassroots efforts to restore abandoned heritage sites in East Germany and has since expanded into a European network fostering heritage conservation, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
The organisation believes that heritage should be actively lived, not just preserved as static monuments. By creating open spaces where people from diverse backgrounds can collaborate, Open Houses promotes a participatory approach to heritage conservation. Through international workcamps, training courses, and long-term volunteer programmes, participants engage in hands-on restoration, sustainable site management, and skill-building activities.
Volunteering is at the heart of Open Houses fostering a spirit of collective effort, learning, and cultural exchange. The organisation provides opportunities for individuals of all backgrounds to contribute to meaningful projects, offering hands-on experiences that promote teamwork, self-reliance, and cross-cultural understanding. Through workcamps, mid-term volunteering, and leadership programmes, participants develop practical skills, engage with local communities, and take an active role in maintaining shared spaces. By creating non-commercial, inclusive environments, Open Houses. encourages personal growth, social responsibility, and the strengthening of international networks based on collaboration and mutual respect.
As the parent organisation of European Heritage Volunteers, Open Houses also plays a key role in coordinating conservation projects across Europe, supporting grassroots initiatives, and advocating for heritage as a shared cultural responsibility beyond national borders.
Description of work:
Lohra Castle, with its centuries-old architecture and vast natural surroundings, is not only a site of historical significance but also a living, functioning place that requires continuous care and attention. This workcamp offers volunteers the opportunity to actively contribute to the sustainable management of the castle, ensuring that its grounds remain accessible, welcoming, and well preserved. While this workcamp does not involve hands-on heritage conservation interventions, it plays an equally essential role in the long-term care of the site, allowing future visitors and guests to experience and appreciate Lohra Castle as a harmoniously maintained historic and natural space.
The volunteers will engage in seasonal maintenance tasks, including mowing and collecting overgrown grass, clearing organic material from public areas, and ensuring that the castle’s open spaces remain well-kept. These tasks are crucial for the aesthetic and functional upkeep of the historic ensemble, preserving the visual integrity of the castle and its surroundings. The work also extends to the general maintenance of communal spaces and halls, contributing to the overall experience of visitors who use the castle for cultural events, educational programmes, and retreats. The income generated from these activities is directly reinvested into the castle’s conservation and educational projects, meaning that the work of volunteers directly supports heritage preservation efforts, even if not through conservation itself.
Beyond the practical tasks, the workcamp offers a unique and immersive experience. When the castle closes its doors to the public in the evenings, it becomes the volunteers' home, a place where they can experience the privilege of inhabiting a medieval site. In this way, they take on the role of stewards, caring for the space as if it were their own. The experience encourages a sense of responsibility, ownership, and connection to heritage, reinforcing the idea that heritage sites thrive not only through large-scale restoration projects but also through the daily care and
Description of location and leisure:
Lohra Castle, located in northern Thuringia, Germany, stands as one of the region’s most representative medieval fortifications located in the vicinity of important trade routes that connected the medieval world of central Europe. Though its present form is modest, the castle continues to command a striking position within the hilly landscape near a natural reserve. With a history spanning over a thousand years, the site reflects multiple layers of architectural evolution, shaped by shifting political, economic, and social contexts over the centuries.
The architectural ensemble of Lohra Castle presents a rich assortment of historical styles, with elements dating back to the 11th century. Among its most remarkable features is a Romanesque double-floored chapel from the 12th century, an exceptional structure that highlights early medieval religious architecture. Traces of medieval fortifications and towers, as well as a Renaissance-era manor house, further illustrate the site’s transformation from a medieval defensive stronghold into a more residential and agricultural complex.
Despite its historical significance, Lohra Castle was abandoned for several decades, leading to neglect and structural deterioration. In the 1990s, the site was rediscovered and revitalised through the efforts of Open Houses, which has since used the castle as a base for heritage conservation, cultural initiatives, and international collaboration. Today, it serves as a centre for hands-on restoration projects organised by Open Houses´ daughter organisation European Heritage Volunteers, as well as training courses organised by partner educational institutions, and volunteer-driven maintenance efforts such as this workcamp, welcoming participants from across the world to engage with its unique built heritage.

Volunteers stay in rustic but fair conditions, often within the historic sites they are helping to maintain. While the facilities are basic, they provide all essential necessities, including shared rooms, communal kitchens, and sanitary facilities. A key aspect of the experience is the collective preparation of meals—participants take turns cooking, introducing dishes from their home countries, and fostering a spirit of camaraderie through shared meals. This collaborative approach strengthens bonds among volunteers, making the experience as much about cultural exchange as it is about practical work. Food is fully provided as part of the programme, ensuring that volunteers do not face additional costs. Description of work:
The camp leader acts as a bridge between the volunteers, the organization, and the technical leaders overseeing the practical work. Their primary role is to support the group from a social and intercultural perspective. This is a great opportunity to develop leadership, organizational, and intercultural skills while making a meaningful impact. Camp leaders must work independently while collaborating with co-leaders and technical staff. The role demands effort, empathy, and teamwork but also offers a fulfilling and fun experience. Open Houses encourages creativity and provides guidance and training. Before leading a camp, leaders will participate as regular volunteers to familiarise themselves with the role.
Responsibilities include social and organizational leadership (welcoming volunteers, introducing them to the camp, and organizing daily schedules, including work, meals, and breaks), group coordination (such as managing rotating cooking and cleaning teams, purchasing food, and overseeing meal preparation), organizing leisure activities (planning evening events like campfires, barbecues, and games, as well as weekend trips to nearby towns), providing team support (staying in close contact with technical leaders, assisting in work tasks when needed, and helping coordinate working groups) and general camp management tasks including handling finances, documenting activities through notes and photos, and leading evaluations.

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
This workcamp is based on the cooperation between IBG and the regional “Foundation for Nature and environment”. We have been working together since 2016, organising one or two international Workcamps per year in the field of nature protection.
Description of work:
Active for climate protection and biodiversity – save the peatlands in the Hunsrück area.
You will actively contribute to protecting some special peatlands, which are situated on the slopes of the lower mountain range called “Hunsrück”. These areas were drained more than 100 years ago for forestry use but they are a valuable and natural Co2 storage. Therefore the revitalisation of these peatlands was started, Under the supervision of a Park Ranger you will improve the water balance in the moor areas in order to renature the moors, and also to help the moors to arrange better with the consequences of climate change . The measures will include closing some ditches as well as other small interventions to control the water flow. The work is expected to take place in two different Hunsrück peatland areas: A peatland forest area near the tiny village of Hochscheid and an area of open moorland near Morbach. As this one moor has been opened up for tourism, one task might be the closure of a ditch under a footbridge used along a hiking trail. This will make the revitalised moor more visible for hikers and offers the opportunity for environmental education activities. During the work and on some excursions, the park ranger will introduce you to many aspects of the ecological background.
Attention: The work might be physically hard and you will get wet and muddy for sure! Please bring hiking boots, rubber boots and working clothes.
Description of location and leisure:
The workcamp will take places in the western part of Rhineland-Palatinate. You will stay in Deuselbach, a small village with 260 inhabitants. The local villagers are very much interested to welcome you, many parties and events will happen. Deuselbach has a pub but no shops. The next bigger village (Thalfang) is 5km far, here you can find everything you need (shops, swimming pool…). There are also many tourists in the area as it is well known for hiking all over the year and for skiing in winter. The next bigger city it Trier (40 km), the oldest Germany city with many Roman sights, a huge cathedral and plenty of this to do (vineyard, shopping, clubs…). You will do several excursions with the support of the Park Rangers, e.g. to Trier, the oldest German city with many famous sights.

Short remarks for the project:
This is a special project for nature lovers and people interested in nature protection work. You will get wet and dirty. Please be aware that ticks can be an issue when you spend a lot of time outdoors in natural areas in Germany - like in this camp. In our General Infosheet you will find suggestions on how you can protect yourself against them. You are also welcome to check whether a vaccination against the tick-borne disease TBE makes sense and is possible in your home country.

We work to improve the quality of life of young people in our autonomous community, developing actions and programs that benefit them, increase their well-being and allow them to improve their skill.
Description of work:
The work will be environmental and will consist of maintenance work on the island, fire surveillance, information work and visitor awareness, and specific interventions to improve the park in collaboration with the environmental service workers. Cleaning of the South Island (the only island not communicated by passenger boat). (This activity depends on the park, it cannot be carried out in all shifts).
Description of location and leisure:
This work camp is located on the Illas Cíes, specifically on the Island of Monteagudo (north) at the mouth of the Ría de Vigo, in the municipality of Vigo (Pontevedra).
The Cíes Islands form part, together with the Cortegada, Sálvora and Ons archipelagos, of the Galician Atlantic Islands Maritime-Terrestrial National Park.
The ecological value of its marine environment is incalculable since within its waters some of the most representative examples of Atlantic marine ecosystems are preserved, which treasure great biological wealth.
The marine environment of the Park is a great mosaic of different habitats that support an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna. There are important communities such as brown algae forests (Saccorhiza polyschides and Laminaria spp.), or those associated with seabeds such as those of Mäerl, and we also find habitats defined as of community or priority interest within the Habitats Directive of the European Union, such as reefs, lagoons or shallow sandbanks permanently covered with seawater.
The terrestrial environment is strongly influenced by the proximity of the ocean, highlighting the dune systems, the cliffs and the gorse or heather thickets.
Also in the emerged part of the islands we find habitats considered to be of community interest or priority by the directives, such as the gray dunes, the aerohaline coastal scrub or the southern Atlantic humid heather scrub.
The main problem for conservation in this environment has been human pressure. Especially in the Cíes Islands, eucalyptus, pine or acacia plantations have displaced the native vegetation in several areas. The eradication of these native species is a very long-term process that is already being worked on and the results of which will be seen gradually.
Actions are currently being carried out to develop adequate management of public use, waste from the islands, navigation and anchoring of boats, fishing, shellfishing, etc.
Sport fishing and underwater fishing are prohibited within the limits of the National Park.
