    Description of the Project
Climate change is one of the most general threats to peace and security worldwide at the least at this moment. However it has been obvious that not many people would list this as a key factor in international relations and domestic welfare. Climate change touches all areas of security, peace building, and sustainable development. The impacts of climate change are already adversely affecting vulnerable communities, as well as stretching the capacities of societies and Governments. Climate change is best understood as a ‘threat multiplier’, i.e. something that interacts with existing pressures (such as social conflict, economic inequality, large-scale migration, or competition for resources) and further compounds these issues—increasing the likelihood of instability or violent conflict. Peace & Climate change project is aiming to increase awareness and make contribution to the projects that support environmental sustainability.

    Project Activities
Kenya: The first two weeks the project will be hosted in Kenya with Roddys Eco-Cover; a community based organization founded in 2011 to champion environmental awareness with forestry as key concern. The project was established by members of the local community with the aim of empowerment for the less fortunate members in the quest to tackle development challenges at the grassroots. Its major focus is on environmental concern to mitigate the effects of climate change and foster inter-cultural education among the local community. Activities will include:-
    • Agro forestry that will include tree planting
    • Preparation of tree nurseries and weeding
    • Land-scaping and tending to bamboo trees in the natural habitat
    • Clean up activities
    • Naming of trees
    • Home visits, Inter-cultural learning coupled with home visits for exposure to development challenges.

    2. Tanzania: Volunteers are expected to participate in the following outlined activities for their time in Tanzania.
    • Mangrove trees planting: Mangroves protect shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods. Mangroves also help prevent erosion by stabilizing sediments with their tangled root systems. They maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land. Despite these benefits there has been destruction of mangrove forests and harvesting practices which are not sustainable.

    • Environmental cleaning and waste management: Participating in community clean ups events and managing the waste in the community. This will be developing waste sites and demonstration on how to separate garbage.

    • Environmental education: Sensitization of environment care as a means of maintaining peace and security. This will be done through creative means including sports, arts, music and exhibitions.

Volunteers are expected to participate in the following outlined activities for the duration of this project:-
    • Mangrove trees planting: Mangroves protect shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods.

    ● 주요내용

    Description of the Project
In Tanzania, Kenya, Japan as other countries around the world, environmental sustainability is topic which received more and more attention due to its importance of human existence. Many people may have heard about environmental sustainability and are not sure exactly what it means. Lack of knowledge and exposure has significantly increase lifestyles that cause more environmental damage for future generations to deal with. Environmental sustainability applies to almost every part of daily life hence there is an importance to be addressed.
Environmental sustainability project is an initiative that is aiming to address challenges to attain sustainable development in Uzi Village, Tanzania and Kimende in Kenya. Members of these villages are united by shared socio – economic and cultural spiritual values. However some threats to sustainability have been poor forest management, sustainable fishing and farming and diversification of livelihood opportunities to attain sustainable living.

    Project Activities
    • Mangrove trees planting (Tanzania): By planting and re-planting we will continue protect shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods. Mangroves also help prevent erosion by stabilizing sediments with their tangled root systems. They maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land.

    • Tree Planting (Kenya): Planting tree in the forest and other public areas. This is a continuous activity happening in the degraded areas in the forest as well as establishing green parks for public and green schools.

    • Environmental cleaning and waste management: In Both countries (Tanzania and Kenya). We will participate in community clean ups events and managing the waste in the community.

    • Environmental sustainability awareness events: Sensitization of environment care as a means of sustainable living. This will be done using creative means including sports, arts, music and exhibitions.

    ● 위치

    Description of Location
This project will be hosted in two communities in Tanzania and Kenya as follows:-
    • Tanzania: Uzi is a small island in the south of Zanzibar’s main island Unguja. Little has changed in Uzi during the last centuries. Most of the island's 5000 people are fishermen and farmers. The island is located in the Menai Bay conservation area which forms an important ecosystem of mangrove forests, sea grass beds, islands with fresh water forest, coral reefs and a large diversity of plants, land and water animals, including dolphins, African Sea Eagles, and protected marine turtles.

    • Kenya: A Few kilometres from Nairobi is Kimende Town, and a popular forest known as Kereita forest conserved by Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO). One can find hiking trails into the forest as well as Waterfalls. Unexploited by humans and not much of tourists flow, it is very serene and pristine and recently an eco-tourism activity happening in the forest where by the forest hosts the longest zip line in East and central Africa. There are lot of Trees with medicinal value and more than 200 species of Birds. It is definitely a haven for Bird-watchers categorised as an important bird area (IBA). The Sub-county is inhabited by the Kikuyu speaking community who are part of the Kenya Eastern Bantu. Kereita Forest was a hideout for the Mau. Since independence and the fact that the area was known to be Mau hide out, it has been regarded as a site or a place of interest with very rich history. The eco-system has caves, where the MauMau fighters used as their hide outs and also as shelter.

Meeting point, date and time: Volunteers will be picked at River man Hotel- Stone Zanzibar, located behind Anglican Christ Cathedral (Former slave market) on specified above starting date of the project at 03:00pm. If you wish to stay in this hotel before or after the project you can book online and specify that you are one of the UVIKIUTA volunteers. Since this place is famous and accessible from both Zanzibar ferry port and Zanzibar International Airport- there will be NO airport pick up service.
