The camp host is a local 4H club. The volunteers will be assisting in organisation of two children’s camp. The volunteers will work as camp instructors, kitchen assistants for the camp cook and as general helpers in order to help run two five day children’s camps in Tuusula. Children’s camp program includes arts and crafts, outing in the nature, sports and games. We hope that as a camp-leader you are enthusiastic, happy and creative! Various summer activities such as swimming, playing games, exploring local sights and fishing are possible.

Tuusula is located in Southern Finland. It belongs to the Helsinki sub-region, population is about 40 000.

TERMINAL: Helsinki

Accommodation for volunteers will be in the house by the lakeside. Volunteers eat breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner with the children. During the break between the two camps volunteers can cook together in the house. In the camp area the local host has many dogs so the volunteers cannot have any animal allergies.

The host of this camp is the Youth Department of Janakkala. The volunteers will work in a summer camp for local children and youngsters. Volunteers will work alongside the local youth workers. Camp activities include arts and crafts, swimming and sauna, hiking, campfire and sports. The aim of this camp is to give international and multicultural experiences to the local children and youth and to break barriers between different cultures. This camp is a good opportunity to get to know Finnish culture and nature in summer, as the volunteers will be in Finland during the mid-summer.

The municipality of Janakkala and the camp centre Mallinkainen is situated in Southern Finland, about 90 kilometers from Helsinki.

TERMINAL: Hameenlinna

Volunteers will sleep in the camp center where the summer camp is taking place. During the summer camps, volunteers have meals with the children. At the weekend, the volunteers will cook together.

This camp is organized by the Municipality of Vaala. The theme of this camp is history and nature combined with Lake Oulujarvi’s recreational opportunities. Volunteers will participate in the renovation of local history museum area in Lamminaho, and making a traditional Finnish wooden shingle roof. Lamminaho is a unique complex of buildings that consists of items and buildings that date back to 1700 and onwards. Lamminaho is an exceptionally well-preserved example of the traditional Finnish buildings. The volunteers will also have a chance learn about Rokua Geopark area and experience activities such as hiking and kayaking.

Vaala is a beautiful place in northern Finland about 90km from Oulu and 600 km from Helsinki.

TERMINAL: Vaala. The nearest airport is Oulu (100km).

The accommodation is in Uiton Maja which is a cottage built in 1930 for the local laborers. There are no showers, only sauna, and it is possible to heat it up every day.

The organizer of the camp, Keep Lapland Tidy is an environmental organization established in 1987. Its purpose is to help preserve the clean and enjoyable environment in Lapland and to increase environmental awareness by educating, developing waste management and organize projects and volunteer work and camps. The volunteers will be cleaning and taking care of the natural surroundings of the Bothnia Bay National Park area islands. There will be 15 Finnish volunteers in addition to 5 international volunteers.

The international volunteers will participate in the biannual Friendship Camp organized by the Democratic Union of Finnish Pioneers (SDPL). SDPL is an independent leftist educational organization for children, youth and adults, founded in 1945. The organizations goal is to develop participants into independent and socially conscious individuals, who are actively committed to the pioneer values of freedom, equality and humanity.
The aim of the camp is to provide children and youth with new experiences and to promote cross-cultural friendships. Volunteers will work as assistant camp leaders. Responsibilities include assisting in camp construction and decamping, assisting the Finnish camp leaders with the daily program and workshops (e.g. music, art, media) and generally participating in camp activities.

Sammalniemi Camping Centre is situated in a beautiful lakeside. The nearest city is Tampere, about 65 kilometres away and the distance to Helsinki is about 230 km. The nearest town is Juupajoki, which is located about 20 kilometres from Sammalniemi.

TERMINAL: Helsinki. The organizer will arrange transportation from Helsinki to Sammalniemi.

Volunteers will be accommodated in joint rooms or tents.

Youth Centre Anjala is one of the 10 national youth centres in Finland, supported and supervised by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. The Youth Centre has a non-profit civic responsibility of promoting a good life for children and young people. Our main purpose is to serve children and young people as well as support the work of teachers and trainers.
The volunteers will be working outdoors to maintain the traditional landscape and park in the area. The volunteers will also plan and organize activities for the children who are in Anjala on a summer camp. The goal is to increase multicultural activity in Anjala and its community. Anjala is a small village, 25 kilometers from Kouvola and about 140 kilometers from Helsinki. The Youth Centre is situated by a beautiful area by the River Kymijoki. On the same area there is an old manor building and agricultural school.

The camp is organized by Nuori Pori 2100 (Young Pori 2100) which is a local youth organization. The volunteers will work with local children and disabled people and also to do some environmental work. The volunteers will organize outdoor activities for children at the local playground and also practice and perform a puppet theatre show for them. The volunteers will also assist in environmental work around the parks in Pori and help with removing invasive species of weed such as Impatiens glandulifera (better known in English as “Himalayan Balsam”).

During leisure time, volunteers have possibilities for various kinds of sports and cultural activities.

This camp is co-organized by the local 4H club of Alajarvi and EU funded project called “The World in villages”. The Volunteers will work in Finnish summer surroundings and the work will be renovating and refurbish buildings and cleaning the beach. Saaksjarvi has a very active village association, and the aim of this camp is to bring multicultural atmosphere closer to the people in their local community.

Saaksjarvi is peaceful and beautiful place in countryside by the lake. Nearest town is Vimpeli (15 km) and the distance to Helsinki is about 400 kilometers.

During leisure time, the volunteers have possibilities for various summer activities such as exploring the local nature, sports, swimming in the lake, barbequing at the campfire and visiting local markets.

Friends of Nature in Loppi is a member of Finnish Association of Nature Conservation (FANC). One of the FANC’s aims is to get rid or reduce the occurrence of non-native, invasive plants in Finland, one of the worst being impatiens glandulifera (better known in English as “Himalayan Balsam”). The plant is non-toxic, annual and it is very easy to tug up, but when left alone, it spreads quickly and suffocates other plants in the area. The aim of this summer camp is to clear as many of the plant’s growing areas in Loppi as possible.

The closest towns are Loppi and Karkkila, both about 15 km away. Pilpala is one of Loppi’s small rural villages and the distance to Helsinki is about 70 kilometers.

TERMINAL: Karkkila

The accommodation is in former summer camp center. It is situated in a beautiful place between two small lakes, a small river running just outside the building. The volunteers will cook breakfast, dinners and evening snacks together.

The camp host Vasatokka is one of national youth centers providing services for young people. The work in this camp will be renovating and cleaning the surroundings of Youth Center Vasatokka and Lake Kettujarvi, helping to build the beach volleyball fields and picking berries. In the neighborhood there are husky- and horse farms, so volunteers might also work in these places.

Youth Center Vasatokka is located in the municipality of Inari, in Finnish Lapland, near Lake Muddusjarvi. The area is barren, mostly dry pine forest with lakes, rivers and nice sceneries of arctic hills. For more information: www.vasatokka.fi

TERMINAL: Inari. The nearest airport is in Ivalo (50 km), and railway station in Rovaniemi (300 km).
