Our host for this project is a farmer’s family on the south shore of Iceland close to the town of Vík, the farmers cultivate carrots and keep cows. This is the seventh year that SEEDS volunteers will have the unique opportunity to get to know and explore this traditional Icelandic farm.
There will be various tasks, depending on the weather, some cleaning tasks, for instance clearing fields of rocks, fences, trash, beautifying the area around and removing an invasive species called - Rumex Longifolius; which has been used in Iceland in order to control soil erosion and revegetate eroded areas; but in some places its spread is more than desirable and being a foreign specie endangers the native species. This weed can remain viable for a long time, is helpful for vegetative reproduction, and adaptable to different environments. It is primarily a weed of grassland, and in this habitat it benefits from agricultural practices which lead to disturbance or eutrophication. It reduces production from the field and lowers the feeding value of the grass to the animals.
Those who are interested can help out with farm activities, such as taking care of the animals, cultivating potatoes and vegetables. Participants are invited to take a look at the cows in the stalls, assist in milking them if interested or just tending to them in general. The group will also be taking care of trees, cutting and planting them.
The weather conditions in Iceland are unpredictable, especially during winter and in early April the average temperature is just above zero. Be prepared to experience all kinds of weather and be sure to bring warm clothing.
The farm is located in the South of Iceland, in a beautiful area surrounded by mountains and glaciers to the north and near the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The closest town is Vík.
The inhabitants here live in constant threat of volcanic eruptions and the area was covered by ashes during the recent eruptions in Eyjafjallajökull 2010 and Vatnajökull (Grimsvötn) in 2011.
Vík is Iceland's southernmost village. Mýrdalur is bordered by the glacial river Jökulsá to the west and the river Blautakvísl to the east. Its northern border is the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which caps the volcanic Mt. Katla, while its southern limits are the black sand beach and the rolling Atlantic waves. The district lives mainly by agriculture. Although this community of 600 inhabitants faces the open Atlantic, Vík is the only seaside settlement in Iceland left without a harbour due to natural circumstances. Among the many attractive aspects of Vík, are the trips to the South shore and to Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

Our host will organise free time activities in the area, depending on the weather conditions.
Volunteers have to bring good working shoes and clothes, even though summer is coming, it might still be cold and hats and gloves might be necessary.
During this workcamp, volunteers will deal with different tasks related to renovation and maintenance of our houses in the east of Iceland. The work will depend on the skills and knowledge of each volunteer, but focuses mainly on tasks such as painting, cleaning, fixing small things, and acquires basic knowledge of carpentry and construction. During winter in Iceland the accommodations are prepared for the summer. This camp is extremely important for us and for our summer volunteers. If the weather conditions are good, we will also help the local community with various kind of environmental work. In addition to the work, winter in Iceland also means AURORA HUNTING. If you like photography, having an amazing time with friends from all over the world and the Northern lights, this camp will suit you perfectly.
We will be on the lookout for Aurora borealis at night throughout the whole camp, so you will have the opportunity to take photos of this amazing and unique phenomenon. It is very important to bring your camera with you (only cameras that work in long exposure will catch those lights), so don’t forget your tripod and camera. The photos will be of your personal use, but we will also keep the best photos and use them in our brochures, on the website and on social media.
Scoured by Ice Age glaciers, the dramatic east coast boasts long, narrow fjords with steep sides and jagged peaks which contrast with inland fertile farmlands. Natural harbours depict postcard-like fishing villages and seemingly never-ending roads cross the region, providing beautiful views. This is one of the best places in Iceland to see the northern lights.
“Fjarðabyggð" is an association of villages in the Eastern fjords of Iceland. It includes the towns of Eskifjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Mjóifjörður, Neskaupstaður, Reyðarfjörður and Stöðvarfjörður, all tiny fishing villages with steep mountains towering just behind the houses. In this area, you will see some of the features that make Iceland a unique place in the world: spectacular fjords with a rich sea life, a great variety of birdlife and countless breathtaking hiking paths.
Terminal: Intl. Airport: Keflavík (KEF), Reykjavík.
Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik. WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to the east for 180 ? that includes the round trip which is almost 1,400km in total and takes 2 full days. On the way to the camp, we will drive through the south to the east of the island. After the camp, we will drive through the north and west to Reykjavik, if road conditions are favourable. This trip includes unique Icelandic sights, such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava fields, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs. The meeting point is at 08:30 am at the first day of the camp in Tjarnargata 11 which is the city hall of Reykjavik.
Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in the WF houses in Eskifjordur and/or Stodvarfjordur. We offer basic facilities. Beds are provided, however, volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.
Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home!

Leisure: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local swimming pool. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas or steam rooms. The area in the east is also good for hiking, so please bring your hiking shoes.
WF Iceland will organise reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs.
We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.
This workcamp gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues and intercultural learning.
Keep in mind: If you own a camera and a tripod, please bring those with you. You can also bring your laptop, as it can come in handy. In addition, please bring warm clothes with you since we are going to spend our time in an isolated place where the temperatures can get very low. If possible, please bring along traditional food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for intercultural evenings.
WORK/PROJECT: SEEDS volunteers will have the opportunity to work on the historical island of Viðey for the 12th year in a row with our host, the city of Reykjavík.
Viðey is a popular destination during the summer among Icelandic as well as foreign visitors. Volunteers will help prepare the environment for the busy season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline. Volunteers will carry out some planting and other gardening activities as well and possibly make and maintain walking paths.
Depending on the advance of the project, volunteers may have other possible tasks such as checking up and repairing garden furniture.
The weather conditions in Iceland are unpredictable and the temperature in May can drop during the evenings. Be prepared to experience all kinds of weather and be sure of bringing warm clothing as most of the work takes place outdoors. Volunteers should have motivation to work outside and work in all different kinds of weather.
Viðey or “Wood Island” is the largest (1,7 km²) island in the Kollafjorður Bay, just outside Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Viðey was inhabited from soon after the settlement of Iceland already in the 10th century and at the beginning of the 20th century around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited.
There is a regular boat connection between the island and the harbour of Reykjavík. The island is only a few hundred metres away from the city and the trip takes just about 10 minutes. This makes Viðey so special; it is a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the capital.
There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and there is no motor traffic allowed. It also inhabits intriguing sculptural artwork, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars that comprise Richard Serra’s work Áfangar and Yoko Ono’s “Imagine peace” column, a tower of light, which is supported by the widow of John Lennon.
Other places of interest on Viðey are related to archaeological research, the village. At the eastern end of the island is the site of an abandoned fishing village and Viðeyjarnaust, at the southwest of the island, it is a memorial to the twenty men who lost their lives when the cutter Ingvar sank off Viðey in 1906. Dramatic formations of columnar basalt may be seen on the shore.
TERMINAL: Closest international Airport: Keflavík/Reykjavík (KEF). Bus station: Central Reykjavík (BSÍ).
Volunteers will be lodged in a local house on Viðey Island, in a sleeping bag accommodation sharing rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
The house has a well equipped kitchen. Volunteers will receive food ingredients and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please do not forget some traditional/typical food and/or drinks from your home country for the international evening.

Volunteers have to bring good working shoes and clothes. Weather in Iceland may be cold and/or rainy, please bring warm and/or waterproof clothes (overcoats, scarves, gloves and hats) as part of the project and activities takes place outside.
SEEDS volunteers will have free rides in the boat/ferry to the city of Reykjavík during their free time.
Other excursions (South Shore, Hot River hike, Snaefellsnes or Reykjanes Peninsula) can be arranged at discount fares for SEEDS participants in case there is additional free time after work or during the weekends.
The Natural Health Association has a horticultural and environmental department, including forestry, gardening, and greenhouses, which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. Volunteers will help with growing the tomatoes, cucumbers and making tea made of Icelandic herbs and also do some environmental work around the property.
The nature of the work depends largely on weather conditions, which can change quickly. Volunteers should bring clothes appropriate for outdoor work, but also clothes for working inside the warm greenhouses. Working hours are usually from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and volunteers will have a one-hour lunch break.
Hveragerði is a small town of about 1,700 inhabitants that lies some 45 km east of Reykjavík. This friendly little community sits on top of a highly active geothermal field, which provides heat for hundreds of greenhouses where fruit, flowers and vegetables are produced throughout the year. Even bananas grow in these greenhouses! The name Hveragerði means ‘hot springs garden.’ Geothermal energy is Hveragerði’s lifeblood, and you probably won’t find such a natural wonder in the middle of a populated area anywhere else in the world. Nearby you will find an even more geothermally active site: Gufudalur, the lovely ‘Steam Valley’ behind the town. This whole valley is full of hot springs, geysers, mud pots, fumaroles and steaming vents.
Our host is a non-profit organisation called the NLFI Rehabilitation and Health Clinic, which is a part of the Natural Health Association of Iceland. Every year approximately 2,000 patients and other guests enjoy their diverse rehabilitation programs, which are focused on an approach that builds self-confidence and personal responsibility for the patients’ own health. The clinic has earned a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, since its foundation in 1955 for personal and effective care of patients. It is one of the two most important rehabilitation clinics in Iceland. In the last years this ongoing camp has been the most popular camp in our organisation.

Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in a fully equipped bungalow consisting of several double bedrooms and a living room. Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bag, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.
All meals are provided and cooked by our hosts, the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic. The menu for the project is primarily vegetarian, but two times a week it includes locally-caught fish. Leisure: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local geothermally-heated swimming pool. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas or steam rooms. Hveragerði is known for having great areas for hiking, including the hot river in Reykjadalur.
WF Iceland will also organise reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland can offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, geysers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs.
WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to Hveragerdi for 60 euros, which includes the Golden Circle South Iceland excursion and the return trip back to Reykjavik. The meeting point is at 08.30 am at the first day of the camp in Tjarnargata 11 which is the city hall of Reykjavik.
Volunteers will have environmental tasks in different areas in Fjardabyggd, for example cleaning the coastline, planting trees and flowers, taking down old fences, removing lupines or other plants and fixing hiking paths.
Our work will also depend on weather conditions, which is why we have to be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, but hopefully, the weather will be nice most of the time. This is a perfect camp for people who like outdoor work and physical challenges. Working hours are about 6–7 hours a day, 5 days a week.
In this area you will see some of the features that make Iceland a unique place in the world: spectacular fjords with a rich sea life, a great variety of birdlife and countless breathtaking hiking paths. You will explore the area during your stay in the east.
Terminal: Intl. Airport: Keflavík (KEF), Reykjavík.
Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik. WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to the east for 180 ? that includes the round trip which is almost 1,400 km in total and takes 2 full days.
"Worldwide Friends" volunteers will be staying in the WF houses in Eskifjordur and/or Stodvarfjordur. We offer basic facilities. Beds are provided; however, volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.
Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home!
A basic knowledge of English is required for this workcamp.

Leisure time: "Worldwide Friends" volunteers have free access to the local geothermally-heated swimming pool in Eskifjörður.
We will also focus on intercultural learning and exchange.
WORK/PROJECT: SEEDS volunteers will be working on a project in the beautiful forest Jafnaskarðsskógur in the far South-west of Iceland, doing nature and environmental oriented tasks. SEEDS has been cooperating with the Icelandic forest service and our groups of volunteers have been helping out for few years with very good results for the participants, the projects and the Icelandic nature conservation and reforestation efforts.
The main task in hand is to maintain and rebuild a 1,2 km long old footpath within the forest. SEEDS volunteers will perform four different types of tasks depending on the project and host needs each time:
a) Fixing steps on the old footpath, b) Cutting tree branches, c) Vegetation from the path and d) Putting a new layer of wood chips on the footpath. The main tasks will be to maintain and repair existing hiking paths, build steps/stairs. Other tasks may be to trim branches and beautify groves that are located near the trails. Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging the area and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. All work is done by hand with wheelbarrows and hand tools.
The work can be demanding and might require a good physical condition. No previous experience is needed. As it is outdoors work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the -changeable- weather, we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. The working plan will be flexible and it will depend on the needs of our local host, the advance of the diverse projects in the area surrounding the forest and of course on the weather conditions.
Volunteers should be prepared for all kinds of weather and bring warm winter clothes as the tasks take place outside and it can get very cold at this time of the year. Bring warm under-layers, waterproofs, walking shoes/boots, a good sleeping bag, hat scarves and gloves.
The work will take place in the forest Jafnaskarðsskógur which is located 25 Km from Borgarnes and about 3 km from Bifröst. In the area there are many interesting places to visit, the waterfalls Glanni and Barnafossar, hiking trails and Húsafell, a summer house area with a camp site, hot springs, glacier view, golf course and a swimming pool.
West Iceland is famous for its Sagas, most of the Icelandic Sagas were written in West Iceland. Egils Saga, Sturlunga saga and Laxdæla are all stories of farmers, vikings and outlaws in Year 850-1000. In West Iceland you will also have a lot of stories of elves and trolls and folk tales. The area is very charming with a lot of history.
TERMINAL: Closest international Airport: Keflavík/Reykjavík (KEF). Bus station: Central Reykjavík (BSÍ).
Volunteers will be lodged in an old farmstead owned by the Icelandic Forest Service, which is located approximately 5 km from the forest. The house is the old garage at the farm which has been transformed into a summer house. There are beds for 7 people, a small kitchen, dining and a living room, WC and a shower. Volunteers will sleep on mattresses provided, but please bring a sleeping bag.
Food ingredients will be provided and the group will be responsible for cooking and cleaning. Please do not forget some traditional food or drinks from your home country for the international evening.

SEEDS organises the “minibus option”, a shared transport from Reykjavík to the camps and vice-versa, which apart from being cheaper and more convenient, allows volunteers to meet fellow campers and have a relaxed trip, while stopping on the way for interesting and tourist sites.
Free time activities in the area will be organised depending on weather.
Volunteers will have environmental tasks in different areas in Fjardabyggd, for example cleaning the coastline, planting trees and flowers, taking down old fences, removing lupines or other plants and fixing hiking paths.

Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik, Iceland.
The food at the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic is known throughout Iceland for its high quality. The standard of food and accommodation does not get better than in this camp.
