This is the eleventh year that SEEDS organizes series of International Photo marathons. Throughout the year participants from all over the world come to Iceland for an intense photography related learning camp. SEEDS coordinators help the participants to develop their unique photographic skills through workshops and feedback sessions on technical settings, compositional considerations as well as developing conceptual frameworks which progress the participants individual style.
When the workshops end, we select some of our best pictures from the camp and prepare those images for an informal group exhibition in a local independent cinema. Participants should bring with them their own digital cameras, lenses, and laptops if possible. They should be prepared for walking and visually exploring the city streets and working within a flexible time schedule. Participants will be photographing in their free time outside of workshop hours with images to be discussed at group feedback sessions.
Please note this project is more of a learning/sharing camp and not a regular work camp; we may be able to organize some outdoor voluntary service but it depends on our partners and weather conditions.
Additionally, the camp combines exploring Reykjavík, hunting for Aurora and having fun. Participants should also use this opportunity to share something about their own culture with the international group.
In this project SEEDS will organize an Aurora hunting trip (Northern lights) to the countryside in the close vicinity of Reykjavík. This will take place during late evening and possibly into the night. We will pick a night with the best chances given by the Aurora forecast by the Icelandic meteorological office. If we do not catch any northern lights in the first excursion, SEEDS will organise a second trip. Please note, we cannot guarantee that you will see northern lights as solar activity is irregular and it depends on weather and meteorological conditions.
Reykjavik is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with beautiful nature, using renewable energy sources - geothermal- and hydropower. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides. Reykjavík is an International city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded with beautiful nature.
During your stay, the Winter Lights Festival will take place, from February 1 to 4. Darkness will be illuminated by light shows and a lot of events and concerts will take place around the city. Usually there is also the Museums Night and the Pool night. For more information and details, please check http://winterlightsfestival.is/

The organisation has a farmhouse on the outskirts of Reykjavik, 15 km from the center of the capital. Since the creation of Worldwide Friends, the organisation has been looking for an opportunity to set up a project that aims to promote sustainable living. Volunteers will do some renovation in the house and on the property and take care of the work in the farm. We have chickens, a cat, a dog, a greenhouse for growing herbs and vegetables and a piece of land where we grow potatoes, carrots and lettuce.
Volunteers will help with all tasks related to the farm, as the work varies depending on the season. This year, we will also have specific topics to discuss in the workcamps, such as “food waste”, “recycling” and “renewable energy”. We will go for visits related to those topics for example, a avisit to the powerplant Hellisheiðarvirkjun https://www.geothermalexhibition.com/exhibition. The Exhibition is presented via interactive multimedia installations, wall displays and presentations. It allows visitors to examine Iceland’s geothermal energy utilization in a clear and illuminating fashion. We will also visit the recycle Center Sorpa where the volunteers will learn about recycling methods. The volunteers will also create documentaries, posters and brochures related to sustainable living, which will be introduced to children in Reykjavik.
Reykjavik is a city full of energy, just waiting for you to experience it. Powered by heat from the earth below, with ever-changing weather sweeping across the landscape, its natural features are matched by the energy of its residents. Think of the denominators of a great city - fun, culture, nature, clean air - Reykjavik has them in spades. All the advantages of a modern, forward-looking society are complemented by the beautiful natural setting. In a country of only just over 300,000 people, the Reykjavik capital area has a population of about 200,000. However, since it’s the only major city in the country, Reykjavik has a lot of the amenities that you would only expect to find in a much larger center elsewhere in the world.
Reykjavik is the world’s northernmost capital city. Arrive at the right time of year, and in favourable conditions you will see the city’s skyline silhouetted against the glowing, shimmering curtain of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights which can be seen from September until the end of April. Reykjavik is framed by the majestic Mt. Esja and the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay to the north, while rugged lava-fields spread to the southeast. On a clear sunny day, the Snaefellsjökull glacier glitters on the western horizon like a crystal.
Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik, Iceland.
Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in our house in Sveinsstadir, which is located on the outskirts of Reykjavik. This place is like a farm in the city, so you can enjoy pure nature and the city life of the capital at the same time. Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bags and towels, but beds/mattresses and bed linens are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.
Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes (and spices) from home!

Leisure: On weekends, the volunteers can enjoy Reykjavik‘s amazing nightlife, which is world-renowned for its wide array of bars, clubs, and concerts.
WF Iceland will also organise reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland can offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, geysers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs.
WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to Sveinsstadir for 60 euros, which includes the Golden Circle South Iceland excursion and a return trip from the farm to Reykjavik after the camp. The meeting point is at 08.30 am at the first day of the camp in Tjarnargata 11 which is the city hall of Reykjavik
The Natural Health Association has a horticultural and environmental department, including forestry, gardening, and greenhouses, which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. Volunteers will help with growing the tomatoes, cucumbers and making tea made of Icelandic herbs and also do some environmental work around the property.
The nature of the work depends largely on weather conditions, which can change quickly. Volunteers should bring clothes appropriate for outdoor work, but also clothes for working inside the warm greenhouses. Working hours are usually from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and volunteers will have a one-hour lunch break.
Hveragerði is a small town of about 1,700 inhabitants that lies some 45 km east of Reykjavík. This friendly little community sits on top of a highly active geothermal field, which provides heat for hundreds of greenhouses where fruit, flowers and vegetables are produced throughout the year. Even bananas grow in these greenhouses! The name Hveragerði means ‘hot springs garden.’ Geothermal energy is Hveragerði’s lifeblood, and you probably won’t find such a natural wonder in the middle of a populated area anywhere else in the world. Nearby you will find an even more geothermally active site: Gufudalur, the lovely ‘Steam Valley’ behind the town. This whole valley is full of hot springs, geysers, mud pots, fumaroles and steaming vents.
Our host is a non-profit organisation called the NLFI Rehabilitation and Health Clinic, which is a part of the Natural Health Association of Iceland. Every year approximately 2,000 patients and other guests enjoy their diverse rehabilitation programs, which are focused on an approach that builds self-confidence and personal responsibility for the patients’ own health. The clinic has earned a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, since its foundation in 1955 for personal and effective care of patients. It is one of the two most important rehabilitation clinics in Iceland. In the last years this ongoing camp has been the most popular camp in our organisation.
Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik, Iceland.
Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in a fully equipped bungalow consisting of several double bedrooms and a living room. Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bag, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.
All meals are provided and cooked by our hosts, the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic. The menu for the project is primarily vegetarian, but two times a week it includes locally-caught fish. The food at the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic is known throughout Iceland for its high quality. The standard of food and accommodation does not get better than in this camp.

Leisure: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local geothermally-heated swimming pool. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas or steam rooms. Hveragerði is known for having great areas for hiking, including the hot river in Reykjadalur.

During this workcamp, volunteers will deal with different tasks related to renovation and maintenance of our houses in the east of Iceland. The work will depend on the skills and knowledge of each volunteer, but focuses mainly on tasks such as painting, cleaning, fixing small things, and acquires basic knowledge of carpentry and construction. During winter in Iceland the accommodations are prepared for the summer. This camp is extremely important for us and for our summer volunteers. If the weather conditions are good, we will also help the local community with various kind of environmental work. In addition to the work, winter in Iceland also means AURORA HUNTING. If you like photography, having an amazing time with friends from all over the world and the Northern lights, this camp will suit you perfectly.
We will be on the lookout for Aurora borealis at night throughout the whole camp, so you will have the opportunity to take photos of this amazing and unique phenomenon. It is very important to bring your camera with you (only cameras that work in long exposure will catch those lights), so don’t forget your tripod and camera. The photos will be of your personal use, but we will also keep the best photos and use them in our brochures, on the website and on social media.
Scoured by Ice Age glaciers, the dramatic east coast boasts long, narrow fjords with steep sides and jagged peaks which contrast with inland fertile farmlands. Natural harbours depict postcard-like fishing villages and seemingly never-ending roads cross the region, providing beautiful views. This is one of the best places in Iceland to see the northern lights.
“Fjarðabyggð" is an association of villages in the Eastern fjords of Iceland. It includes the towns of Eskifjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Mjóifjörður, Neskaupstaður, Reyðarfjörður and Stöðvarfjörður, all tiny fishing villages with steep mountains towering just behind the houses. In this area, you will see some of the features that make Iceland a unique place in the world: spectacular fjords with a rich sea life, a great variety of birdlife and countless breathtaking hiking paths.
Terminal: Intl. Airport: Keflavík (KEF), Reykjavík.
Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik. WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to the east for 180 ? that includes the round trip which is almost 1,400 km in total and takes 2 full days. On the way to the camp, we will drive through the south to the east of the island. After the camp, we will drive through the north and west to Reykjavik, if road conditions are favourable. This trip includes unique Icelandic sights, such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava fields, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs.
Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in the WF houses in Eskifjordur and/or Stodvarfjordur. We offer basic facilities. Beds are provided, however, volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.
Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home!

The Environment & Sustainability learning camp allows participants to share and learn about global &
local issues through theory and practice. If you are concerned, for example, about climate change, waste
management, animal protection, sustainable solutions & other environmental topics then this project is for you.
Local Icelandic environmental issues as well as issues from the participants’ countries will be addressed.
Please note this project is a learning/sharing camp, in which everybody is expected to contribute their own
knowledge and experience, and not a standard workcamp. The main focus of this camp is to learn about different
aspects of environmental and sustainability issues through a selection of workshops, discussions and visits. Topics
may include issues like renewable energy, food waste, and sustainable practices such as collaborative
consumption or veganism. The over 2 million tourists coming to Iceland every year leave a mark on the country.
This camp will help you to be an environmentally aware traveller & consumer.
Participants also get the chance to visit local projects focused on the environment, such as a visit to a local
recycling centre whereby a tour of the plant is given and the activities are explained. The group will also visit a
Geothermal power plant and have a guided tour of the facilities via interactive multimedia installations, wall
displays and presentations to learn about Iceland‘s geothermal energy utilization.
SEEDS participants may also get a chance to improve the local environment through hands-on volunteer activities.
In most cases, the camp includes a day or two of voluntary service but in some cases it will not be possible, as the
weather does not always allow activities to take place outdoors.
This is a camp that combines learning, sharing, exploring Reykjavík, and having fun. Participants should also use
this opportunity to share something about issues in their home country with the group of international participants.
Participants should be ready to walk around the city for different activities, visits and sightseeing.

Every year WF Iceland hosts hundreds of international volunteers participating in projects all around the island. WF Iceland publishes a magazine called UNA, where people can read about the life of the organisation.
In the beginning of the project, volunteers will receive an introduction about the tasks - afterwards we will choose a topic for the newsletter. This is a great opportunity to step into different projects and get to know Iceland even better. The group will take photos, create videos and conduct interviews with volunteers, local hosts and people living in the area. The outcome will be published in the WF UNA magazine. At the end of the project, we will prepare the final version of the magazine and publish it online.
During this time of the year, the weather in Iceland can be very unfriendly and cold. We strongly recommend you to bring along warm and waterproof clothes. You should also be aware of the fact that the weather can get so extreme that it will not allow us to leave the accommodation for some days. Don't forget to bring your cameras and tripods because we will go for some Aurora hunting. The area in the east is also good for hiking, so please bring your hiking shoes.
In this area, you will see some of the features that make Iceland a unique place in the world: spectacular fjords with a rich sea life, a great variety of birdlife and countless breath-taking hiking paths.
Intl. Airport: Keflavík (KEF), Reykjavík. The closest national airport is Egilsstaðir airport, which is located 40 km from the camp location.
Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik. WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to the east for a fair price (180 ? for the round trip which is almost 1,400 km in total).

Leisure: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local swimming pool. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas or steam rooms. The area in the east is also good for hiking, so please bring your hiking shoes.

If you own a camera and a tripod, please bring those with you. You can also bring your laptop, as it can come in handy. In addition, please bring warm clothes with you since we are going to spend our time in an isolated place where the temperatures can get very low. If possible, please bring along traditional food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for intercultural evenings.

The Environment & Sustainability learning camp allows participants to share and learn about global & local issues through theory and practice. If you are concerned, for example, about climate change, waste management, animal protection, sustainable solutions & other environmental topics then this project is for you. Local Icelandic environmental issues as well as issues from the participants’ countries will be addressed.
Please note this project is a learning/sharing camp, in which everybody is expected to contribute their own knowledge and experience, and not a standard workcamp. The main focus of this camp is to learn about different aspects of environmental and sustainability issues through a selection of workshops, discussions and visits. Topics may include issues like renewable energy, food waste, and sustainable practices such as collaborative consumption or veganism. The over 2 million tourists coming to Iceland every year leave a mark on the country. This camp will help you to be an environmentally aware traveller & consumer.
Participants also get the chance to visit local projects focused on the environment, such as a visit to a local recycling centre whereby a tour of the plant is given and the activities are explained. The group will also visit a Geothermal power plant and have a guided tour of the facilities via interactive multimedia installations, wall displays and presentations to learn about Iceland‘s geothermal energy utilization.
SEEDS participants may also get a chance to improve the local environment through hands-on volunteer activities. In most cases, the camp includes a day or two of voluntary service but in some cases it will not be possible, as the weather does not always allow activities to take place outdoors.
This is a camp that combines learning, sharing, exploring Reykjavík, and having fun. Participants should also use this opportunity to share
something about issues in their home country with the group of international participants. Participants should be ready to walk around the city for different activities, visits and sightseeing.
Reykjavik is often called “the nightlife capital of the north”, but there is more than pubs and clubs. It also gathers the most interesting of Icelandic culture. It is an incubator of new ideas & styles which often indicates new global trends. It is an International city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded with beautiful nature.
TERMINAL:
Closest international Airport: Keflavík/Reykjavík (KEF).
Bus station: Central Reykjavík (BSÍ).
SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a shower, washing machine, kitchen and everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. We will sleep in shared rooms in a sleeping bag accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
We will receive food supplies and you will be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. Do not forget some traditional/typical food from your home country for the international dinner.
