Travel back in time to the Middle Ages! Help transform a village into a medieval festival! Each year, this festival, founded by the organization “Souvigny Grand Site” attracts more than 30.000 visitors during one week. For 22 years the village has been hosting international workcamps that work with the local volunteers on the organization of the event.

Work: The work consists of three steps: setting up, the work during the week long festival and in the end transforming the village back to its usual self. During all of the three weeks you will cooperate with the big team of local volunteers to set up stages, tend to stalls, cook and serve food, and any other task that is necessary for the festival to run smoothly.

Be aware that the work during the festival is intense and demands a lot of energy and a high level of flexibility. Some of the stalls are open until midnight!

Leisure activities: The activities during your free time will be organised collectively with the whole group. During the second week and the weekends you will be very occupied with your work on the festival but you will have time to discover the region together during the last week. Nevertheless, you will have the possibility to enjoy the concerts, workshops, exhibitions and other activities which take place during the festival.

You will be participating in this heritage site’s development project, which aims to open the silver mine to the public. Since 2011, volunteer workcamps have been reviving the accessibility to this site, both above and underground. Archaeological digs have also been taking place since 2009. The Vallauria mine was exploited between the Middle Ages and 1930. Today the site represents an example of remarkably well conserved historical and geological heritage, and is one of the most important mines in the Alps.

Work: You will be working underground in the Discovery Room. The work will consist on securing and making the exit of the the San Felice gallery accesible: by installing a ramp and a stone staircase. The materials (sand and lime) for this project will be delivered to the site by helicopter.
You will be working four days per week from 08:30 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:30. You will be accompanied by a technical supervisor and this work-camp will be archaeologically monitored.

Tende - 2 hours from Nice by train. Neige & Merveilles is located at 1.500 metres above sea level in an isolated mountainous area, 10 km from the Closest village of Tende, and 50 km from Vintimille (Italy).

You will be working underground.

Leisure activities: The program of activities that we offer will allow you to discover the Alpine environment where we are located, as well as the discovery of the region’s historical and cultural heritage. Discovering the mining village and previous work carried out at the site will be an important part of your stay. You will also be able to participate in other activities such as hiking, visiting picturesque villages in the Roya-Bévéra valley, and sporting activities such as visiting a forest adventure centre.

You will participate in the restoration of a site that represents an example of remarkably well conserved historical and geological heritage, and is one of the most important mines in the Alps. The Vallauria mine was exploited for its galena (silver-bearing lead), and blend (zinc based mineral) from the Middle Ages until 1930. Since 2011, volunteers have been reviving the accessibility to this site, both above and underground. Archaeological digs have also been taking place at the site since 2009.

Work: You will work in the Pillar Room located underground. The work consists of securing and supporting the existing vaults: Construction of walls following the traditional dry stone construction technique. The materials (sand and lime) will be delivered to the site by helicopter. This workcamp involves 4 days of work per week, from 08:30 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:30. A technical supervisor will accompany you during your working day. This workcamp will be archaeologically monitored.

Tende (06430) - 2 hours from Nice by train. The organisation “Neige et Merveilles” is located at an altitude of 1.500 metres in an isolated mountainous area, 10 km from the Closest village of Tende, and 50 km from Vintimille (Italy).

You will be working underground at the entrance of the mine with some heavy material such as rocks and buckets of mortar.

You will discover the Alpine environment, as well as the region’s historical and cultural heritage. You will also be able to participate in other activities such as hiking in the “Vallée des Merveilles” in the Mercantour National Park, swimming in the Bendola river, visiting local villages (Tende, La Brigue, Saorge), tying the Via Feratta and in the evenings, enjoying dance, photo-video sessions, stargazing, board games, barbecue, international meals, etc. One day per week in addition to the weekend will be dedicated to activities outside of the workcamp.

Located in the Monts de la Madeleine, Arfeuilles is a small town of mountain, between 400 and 800 meters above sea level. In the South, the Barbenan creek starts, and its gradually becomes, with input streams of the nearby hills, the river running through the town of Arfeuilles. Formerly, turbines allowed to supply electricity to the village of Arfeuilles, thanks to the large flow of rivers in the municipality. The municipality would like to revive this activity and make Arfeuilles self-reliant in electricity production and consumption: it will become a positive energy territory (PET). Very enthusiastic about the project of hosting an international workcamp for the second time, the municipality would like the young volunteers to help to develop and enhance the river on which were once the turbines. Your coming is essential to get to the river its vital role on the territory!

WORK: The goal of the project is to give a new life to the small river that runs through the village.
Currently, bushes and shrubs have invaded the banks, the wall that runs along the river disappears, and the path is impracticable allows you to walk along the brook. We must therefore carry out clearance work, cleaning rivers, clearing brush the banks to highlight the wall and make accessible trail. You will participate in the work with other international volunteers and technical supervisor will teach you specific techniques. The work takes place in the morning for 5 hours maximum. Afternoons and weekends are reserved for activities.

Vichy
- At the heart of the Bourbonnaise Mountain, Arfeuilles is located in a particularly remarkable natural setting. You can make many walks along the river and admire the waterfall of Pisserotte, tourist shrine, the Calvary and the Madonna overlooking the valley. Arfeuilles also has a particularly typical built heritage, like the dungeon of Montmorillon. Located both on the pilgrimage path Saint Jacques de Compostela and the Via Santi Martini, which crosses Europe from Hungary, many hikers and tourists are passing through the town during the summer. The life in Arfeuilles is very lively during the summer: fireworks, craft festival, festival of the Rivers, Classical Music Festival, the Great Games, which bring together all surroundings towns ... Other activities and events will also be organized with local associations (football tournament ...) and artisans of the municipality (painter, sculptor ...): the best opportunities to discover the culture of Auvergne region!

TERMINAL: Vichy

Volunteers will be accommodated at the campsite of the town, and tents will be loaned by Jeunesse et Reconstruction. Remember to bring your sleeping bags and warm clothes. All facilities are available in the locker room (showers, toilets). You will have access to the school cafeteria to cook and eat together: you will find fridge, stove, tables and chairs. A budget will be allocated for shopping and activities, and you will cook in turn, by two. Being well accommodated within the town will give you the opportunity to connect with the people, to easily get to the market at the nearby shops (bakery, grocery) and at local producers to do your food shopping. Jeunesse et Reconstruction can’t take into charge the volunteers before the start date of the workcamp.

Every year, the Crest Jazz Vocal Festival is the strong moment of the summer period. The material organization of this big manifestation requires a lot of time and a lot of volunteers available; so does the daily cleaning of the festival area. For more than 10 years, motivated volunteers from Jeunesse et Reconstruction have helped the local volunteers in its organisation. WORK: Guided by the volunteers of the association “Crest Jazz Vocal”, you will participate in the festival lifetime: setting up rooms, installation of the festival area, cleaning after each performance (scene, outside space, toilets…). You will have to participate into the waste management by using the recycling bin (glass/paper/...etc). At the end of the festival, you will have to remove and store materials. On some evenings, you will also participate in drinks and concert posters selling; participants have therefore to be able to communicate in French, at least at a basic level.
NB: * some tasks are repetitive but essential; * your motivation is really needed before, during, but also after the festival; * working hours may be very VARIABLE; * time for leisure or for the group life will depend on the needs for help on the festival area; * Work 20 hours a week; you may have to work on Saturday and Sunday. The volunteers are expected to be dynamic, enthusiastic and ready to meet the many local volunteers and the festival audience. You will have a free access pass and be able to attend most of the concerts. You will not be given access to the technical area (musical instruments).

Crest
- Located in the Drôme valley, in the south of the Vercors regional park, the town of Crest counts 8000 inhabitants. Dominated by its medieval tower, the town owns an inheritance of quality. Very busy in the summer period, the town offers many sport and cultural activities. Possible free time activities (to be decided with the camp leader and local partners) : Visit of the Tower, visit of the towns of Valence or Die (old town and cooperative cellar), night markets, free concerts within the jazz festival, swimming pool, canoe, discovering Vercors mountains footpaths... You will be in charge of organizing an international meal for the inhabitants during your stay; please do not forget to bring specialties and traditional recipes from your country, as well as pictures, music, curios to share about your culture!

You will be hosted in a former school. Kitchen, showers and WC in a building few meters away from the gymnasium. Jeunesse et Reconstruction provides you with mattresses to be put on the floor but do not forget bed sheet and sleeping bag. Meals will be prepared together and shared with the whole group, and you are expected to contribute to everyday tasks (cooking, washing up, cleaning …). Don’t forget to bring ingredients and recipes from your country to show your country’s gastronomy to the other volunteers and the inhabitants. At 1500 m altitude, in a grand mountain scenery, take part in the restoration of Fort Victor-Emmanuel. You will participate in various masonry and development activities. Also on the program: hiking in the Vanoise National Park, the route via ferratta (climbing route equipped hardware), tree climbing. The accomodation was

At the foot of the Massif du Dévoluy, in the Hautes-Alpes, are the remains of the castle of Lesdiguières, located at the entrance of a hamlet of the same name, in the district of Glaizil. This castle was built in the 16th century by François de Bonne, the future duke of Lesdiguières and the last constable of France. Today, only the ruins of the old chapel, the towers, and broken down sections of the walls can be found at the site of this once-grand castle, ranked as a French national historic monument. Since 2010, an international youth workcamp is organized here every year.

Work : You will participate in the restoration of an escape wall. This wall, at the time, was used for defense and protection of the castle (outer moat wall). Today, this moat is dry. You will intervene with the help of a technical supervisor to restore this wall using traditional masonry techniques. Searching and sorting of the stones will be done, then you will re-use these stones to fill the gaps. You will be doing small construction work.

Leisure activities : You will be able to organize hikes, swimming trips, sports, games, and sightseeing tours in the surrounding areas. During your free time, you will also be able to organise events with locals such as international meals, joint workcamp days, parties, festivities…

In the majestic cliffs of the Hautes-Alpes region, the organization Les Villages des Jeunes manages, animates and renovates the Faï visitor centre since 1990. The farm of Faï is situated at 1000 meters above sea level. From April to December, the association organizes workshops for local people with social and professional difficulties. And the project welcomes young people experiencing difficulties at home or at school. In summer, Faï is also a place for professional artists whose come to take advantage to create together and throw festivals which take place in Faï: FestiFaï, Echos, The Singing Mountains ... The workcamps that are organized in Faï contribute in making this site an original place where young people and adults, from many different countries and cultures, work and live together. We hope that you too, will come in this spirit of encounter and "doing together" that drives our project!

Work: The reception center is composed of several buildings, including the "Auberg'in" house. This project concerns the insulation of the exterior walls of this building. You will be accompanied by a technical supervisor and work together to put a natural insulation (straw and lime) after preparing the walls and having built a wooden frame. Through this project, you will discover new techniques including those of traditional plaster and the use of eco-materials.

The farm of Faï (3 km from the village of Le Saix, 30 km from the city of Gap).

Leisure activities: Located in a remarkable natural environment, Faï is an ideal place to discover the pleasures of mountain hiking, swimming in the river and enjoying the rural life with its farmers’ market and producers. In the evening, you can organize board games, screenings, international meals. Throughout the workcamp, visits to discover other touristy villages of the area can also be organised!

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Duravel has a very rich 2000 year old history. It was founded by the ancient Romans because of its strategic geographic location between Bordeaux and Lyon. Many remains are still visible today, in spite of the many religious wars that took place here (1596). The city would like to preserve and restore its famous historical heritage, and more specifically its 160 meters high Middle-Age battlements that protected the city during war against England in the year 1369. You will be working on these battlements. It is the 5th consecutive year that Duravel and its local population are warmly welcoming an international workcamp.

Description of work:
You will work on the renovation of the North battlement of the city: dismantling and reassembling the stones, sealing. There will be some traditional masonry work. Physical work.

Duravel (1000 inhabitants) is a very touristic place in the south-west of France, in the Lot valley, 40 km west of Cahors. Duravel is located between two wooded hills overlooking many wine estates. You will have the opportunity to go on hikes and walks, visit night markets, go on wine tastings in castles or visit some sightseeing (Roc Amadour, St Cyr la Popie etc.).

You will sleep in the stadium building. You will have access to the showers, bathroom and sports room. You will have access to the rest of the facilities for the meals.

Make sure to bring gloves, working clothes and working shoes. Bring warm and rain clothes, hiking shoes, and a thick sleeping bag (nights may be chilly). Sleeping mats will be lent to you. You will have the opportunity to go swimming, remember to bring your swimsuit!

Live the village life, meet welcoming locals and participate in building peace. At the heart of a vast and green forest, in a magical atmosphere stands an old looking stone bridge. It is said to symbolize peace between people from the way it was rebuilt. Indeed, no less than 5 international workcamps have participated in the collective projects that saved the fallen bridge. Morlhon-Le-Haut takes on it's 6th international group that have the task to finish this outstanding project. Sheltered by a village perched on a hill ringed with trees, this small yet magical heritage site had, for a long time, been left forgotten. One arch of the bridge was taken by the rise of the stream around 50 years ago and hadn’t been crossed since. The bridge has been totally rebuilt and now it needs to be enhanced. It's your turn to pick up the relay and finish this great adventure!

Work: You will work in a beautiful natural environment on this sixth stage of the renovation. Part of the work will be the enhancement of the walking trails leading towards the bridge and the other part will be to install a relaxing area for hikers that use the trail (installing picnic tables, etc.) A municipal employee, that has been the technical leader since the beginning of the project will accompany you on site.

Leisure activities:You will have the opportunity to discover Aveyron's natural sites, such as the canyons of Aveyron and Doulouze, and the historical architecture of it's fortified towns, abbeys, and castles. You will also be able to participate in the village's festivities, such as the «Festival of fortified towns» in the surrounding medieval towns, and Morlhon's «Festival of the Lake», where, following tradition, the local youth called «classards» go around the village offering flowers to each house.
