Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
In the heart of an impressive mountain cirque in the French Alps, the hamlet of Vaunières rises on a vast, gently sloping plain. Surrounded by large stone buildings, meadows, and forests, the village welcomes people of various cultures, ages, and social backgrounds, creating a unique atmosphere. Purchased in ruins in the 1960s by the association Les Villages des Jeunes, the site has been entirely renovated and is now a vibrant place of life, animated by events and the multiple local and international connections forged there. Vaunières has become a place for meeting, working, and sharing, where everyone can enjoy both the calm of the mountains and the dynamic energy that emanates from the site. Today, the site lives thanks to a team of employees working on site maintenance, groups of volunteers, tourists, passing hikers, and enthusiasts. Roll up your sleeves and join us on the workcamp and in our collective living spaces!
Description of work:
You will work on preserving the facades of the Hôtellerie building, located in the hamlet of Vaunières. This stone facade is currently covered with an insulation layer and a very damaged coating. You will be responsible for preparing the facades for traditional lime-based work, repointing the stones with mortar, and then applying the bonding coat. A local craftsman will guide you through the different phases of the project. Some tasks will involve working on scaffolding. Every day, other site maintenance activities will be proposed, as well as meal preparation for the team. The menu will be defined in advance. You will work on the site every morning, from Monday to Friday. Generally, the work involves masonry, tool and meal preparation, as well as organizing and managing collective life.

For 10 years, we have been organizing projects at the Plateau de l'Avant-Garde, the site of the former fortress, to restore the town’s beautiful heritage. This year, volunteers will work directly on the remains of the medieval castle, continuing the efforts of previous projects. By hosting the project, Pompey aims to introduce international volunteers to the local culture while also opening up the local population to other cultures and new ways of life.
Join an eco-friendly project to help preserve the remains of a Romanesque fortress and a Gothic castle. With the guidance of a traditional masonry professional, volunteers will help clear vegetation from the ruins and restore them, prepare lime mortar, dismantle and reassemble walls, and carry out plastering, jointing, and roofing using traditional techniques. Expect physically demanding work at times, with some tasks carried out at height. During periods of extreme heat, work will be limited to mornings. The project is certified “100% Ecology” and employs methods that respect both the site and the environment. In case of extreme weather, such as heavy rain or heatwaves, the schedule may be adapted to ensure your safety and that of everyone involved.
