Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Since 2016, the Juszt-is teszünk! Foundation has been active in Bódvalenke. That was the year when the project began that earned the village the nickname "Fresco Village", as Roma painters transformed the walls of the houses into beautiful works of art. Bódvalenke is mostly inhabited by Roma people, whose only employment opportunity is public works. Over the years, several projects have been launched to support the disadvantaged local community. There are nearly 100 children living in Bódvalenke, making up half of the village’s population.
Description of work:
Join an international team of volunteers and help organize a summer camp for children aged 3 to 18! As a volunteer, you can teach English, lead games and sports activities, while giving so much more: bringing joy, building trust, and boosting their self-confidence. The children will attend the activities in age-based groups every day from Monday to Friday. Join the dedicated team of the foundation and bring joy and learning into the lives of local children together!
Description of location and leisure:
Bódvalenke is a small village with approximately 230 residents, located in northern Hungary, in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, near the Slovakian border, within the Edelény district. It is close to Miskolc and surrounded by picturesque natural landscapes. This experience is not only about volunteering but also about connecting with the community, learning about Roma culture, and enjoying meaningful moments with fellow volunteers.
The nearest airport: BUD in Budapest,Hungary
Meeting Point and Time: Meeting point: We will be waiting for you on July 20th at 10:00 AM at Deák Square, at the airport bus stop (100E and 200E). If this time is too early for you, the foundation’s staff can provide accommodation for volunteers the night before. The transportation between Budapest and Bódvalenke will be arranged by the foundation, either by car or train. The journey takes at least 3 hours by car.
Description of accommodation and food:
Accommodation will be provided at the foundation's house, where you can either camp in a tent or sleep in the community space. The house has two separate restrooms with showers. Activities with the children take place outdoors in the yard, so if you need a short break and the group size allows it, you can rest in the sleeping area.
We will provide three meals a day (hot meals for lunch and dinner), with a vegetarian option available. Meals are always shared. Breakfast consists of cold food (e.g., sandwiches, boiled eggs, etc.), while lunch and dinner will be prepared together the night before. The weekly menu will be planned together during the preparatory meeting.

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Every year, the best underground bands, theatres, and the majority of the NGO scene gather in a small lakeside village in Hungary. Participate in the country’s leading socially conscious small festival as a volunteer!
Bánkitó is Hungary’s biggest independent, socially conscious, cultural and community festival with a wide range of programmes throughout its three days (9-12 July 2025) in the summer from music through theatre to contemporary art. It offers concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions, civil initiatives, workshops, and round-table discussions about social justice issues, human rights, and the experiences and cultures of minorities. It takes place at Bánkitó, a small Hungarian village 60kms away from Budapest.
The music at the festival is progressive, contemporary, and constantly renewing, with the newest and most exciting bands of the Hungarian music scene. The civil/cultural programs always poke at important and actual topics, working towards understanding society’s issues with activists from NGOs, musicians, actors, and artists. Contemporary Hungarian theatre pieces will be showcased, and Hungary’s most exciting contemporary artists will transform the shores of Lake Bánk into an art exhibition.
Description of work:
Join the Bankitó Festival team as a volunteer and be part of an unforgettable experience! We are looking for volunteers to help with the festival setup from July 7-9 and cleanup from July 12-13. Your tasks will include construction work such as drilling, assembling, and moving heavy objects – all necessary tools will be provided. In return, you’ll get free access to the festival, where you can enjoy all the programs, concerts, and the vibrant community atmosphere.
Description of location and leisure:
Bánk is a tiny village in Nógrád County, centered around the not-so-tiny Lake Bánk. It has everything a lakeside village might need: a small store, a tobacco shop, a pizzeria, a pub, a few hotels and motels, and a lakeside eatery. However, there is no ATM, local shops have a limited selection, and during the festival, the village can get quite crowded—so if you have any special needs, be sure to bring what you’ll need!
Bánkitó Festival has been a part of the town for 13 years, primarily around the Lakeshore and the Camp. Over the years, it has expanded to the Reeds and the Meadow, creating a unique atmosphere. The lake, the charming wooden cabins, and the hidden venues tucked away in small forest clearings all contribute to Bánkitó’s distinctive character. All of this takes place in the scenic surroundings of Lake Bánk, just a one-hour drive or a leisurely half-day bike ride from Budapest.
This year, the Bánkitó Festival explores how we perceive the world around us. Do you feel overwhelmed by too much information yet still struggle to make decisions? https://bankitofesztival.hu/
The nearest airport: BUD in Budapest,Hungary
Meeting Point and Time: Meeting point: Budapest “Újpest Városkapu” 4 PM, Sunday, July 6. It takes approximately one hour to reach Újpest-Városkapu from the airport using the airport bus and Metro line M3. From Újpest, the team will travel together by public bus to Bánk, first taking a bus to Rétság and then transferring to another bus to Bánk. The total journey takes about 1.5 hours. Buses run roughly every two hours, so you have the option to arrive earlier or slightly later. However, we strongly recommend taking the 7:30 PM bus at the latest, as you’ll still need to set up your tents upon arrival, and doing so at night can be much more challenging.
Description of accommodation and food:
You will live in tents during the festival and you are asked to bring your own tent (we can provide some if needed) and sleeping bags. The wheather in the nights can be cold, so it is suggested to bring warm clothes as well. The first meal will be the breakfast on 7th morning, so please bring some food with you for the first evening. You will receive breakfast and a hot lunch around 2 pm each day. A vegetarian option is available. We provide all the equipment needed to fulfil your tasks.

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Bánkitó is Hungary’s biggest independent, socially conscious, cultural and community festival with a wide range of programmes throughout its three days (13-15 July) in the summer from music through theatre to contemporary art. The festival is located in the countryside and hosts 8000 visitors each year. It offers concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions, civil initiatives, workshops, and round-table discussions about social justice issues, human rights, and the experiences and cultures of minorities. It takes place at Bánkitó, a small Hungarian village 60kms away from Budapest.
The programme of the festival is always organized around a common theme. In 2023, the topic will be Adaptations. It’s not cool to organise a festival in 2023 in the same way as before. In a world where people have less and less money, we don’t want to be fancy. DO NOT: unnecessary ostentation, wasted energy, musicians flown in from thousands of miles away. DO: partying and dancing, a range of cool local and foreign music, theatre, a lot of surprises and a shared reflection on the changes around us that affect us all.
Description of work:
We are looking for volunteers to help run the festival through the preparational work of the festival during 10/07/18 – 14/07/18. It will be construction work, drilling/heavy objects/etc can be expected. Work equipment will be provided. After the preparation work you are free to enjoy the festival and take part on all events. You may join the volunteer team as a photographer and shoot amazing photos during the event. The earliest departure is 16th July anytime.
About the Festival Music – Progressive, contemporary, constantly renewing. These are the words we could use to describe the philosophy behind Bánkitó’s yearly music lineup. The formula remains unchanged but with the addition of bands, the festival’s programme is better than ever.
Our goal is to bring together neighbouring artists and showcase the freshest and most exciting bands of the Hungarian music scene. Civil society and culture – The civil/cultural programmes at Bánkitó always poke at an important, actual and sometimes risky topic. Like in the past years, we will work towards understanding issues of world and society together with activists from NGOs, musicians, actors and artists. Theatre – As an independent theatre showcase festival, Bánkitó wants to present those contemporary Hungarian theatre pieces that tell us something about ourselves, the people around us and our society as a whole. Those pieces that everyone has to see, whose effects will linger on with the audience long after their end. Last year, the theatre tent had great success running full house throughout the festival. Art – A contemporary art exhibition on 80,000 square meters of land. It’s hard to create a space where artists, their art, the message and the audience exist together at the same place, at the same time, with thousands of people. Bánkitó is such a space. Hungary’s most exciting contemporary artists will transform the shores of Lake Bánk into an art exhibition once again. Nonprofit Festival – Bánkitó is not just entertainment. We look at our festival as a social enterprise that is capable of bringing attention to unduly neglected topics and raising awareness in the public’s consciousness. We provide appearance to a number of NGOs so that thousands of people can get to know causes to stand behind as conscious citizens. All this around the picturesque Lake Bánk, a one-hour car ride or half-day bike trip away from Budapest.
Description of location and leisure:
Bánk is a tiny village in Nógrád County with its not-so-tiny Lake Bánk in the middle. Bánkitó Festival has been in town for 12 years, mostly around the Lakeshore and the Camp, though throughout the years, we ventured out to settle around the Reeds and the Meadow. Besides the lake, the small wooden cabins and the venues hiding around small clearings throughout the enclosing forest make Bánkitó the festival it is.

Short remarks for the project:
No special documentation is necessary. No COVID-19 vaccine requirements. No language requirements, but we require a way to communicate with the organizers in Hungarian or English. Please bring clothes that you won’t regret getting dirty during renovation, your sleeping bag and personal medicine.
Partner:
InDaHouse Hungary works in one of the poorest and most disadvantaged regions in Hungary, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. Our volunteers hold individual and group sessions for underprivileged children to help them with their studies and develop their abilities. Our goal is that the kids who take part in our programme become independent, liable adults who are able to control their own life. We have an Early Childhood Development Program for kids under 6, and we study individually with the older ones (from 6 to 18) to practice comprehension, mathematics and English. We also try to broaden their horizons with different activities e.g. hiking, dance lessons, video making courses, etc. In the near future we would like to open a charity shop and a café in the village. We have two old buildings for these purposes that need renovation. Working with volunteers from bigger cities and from abroad also help the local community to connect with different social groups and to be more open. https://indahousehungary.hu/
Work:
The children we work with study English in school but they don’t use it in real life. They hardly ever meet people from abroad, they don’t watch films or read books in English.
From September we would like to have 2 long term volunteers who will regularly teach them English and this camp will serve as a “warm up” for this project where they can experience how to communicate in English, learn and practice some basics of the language. The programme of the camp will also contain a lot of group and team building activities and games. The camp itself will take for 5 days, the kids will be there from 9 am to 5 pm every day. We expect about 50 children, with age between 7 and 16. They will be in groups of 10, each group lead by 2 volunteers. The volunteers will have to take part of the preparations before the camp and the execution of the programmes. Our national InDaHouse volunteers are responsible for planning the programmes in advance and supplying all the necessary materials and equipment, but if you have some ideas or good practice feel free to share them with us!
Location and leisure:
Hernádszentandrás is located in a beautiful surrounding in the North East of Hungary, close to the Slovakian border. The nearest big Town is Miskolc, 40 kilometres away. The village has about 400 inhabitants. There is a small shop and a pub in Hernádszentandrás and there is a restaurant in the next village, Pere. On your free days you can visit Miskolc or Kosice, or the most famous Hungarian wine region, Tokaj. If you like nature you can hike up to the ruins of Regéc castle, Boldogkővárlja castle or to Zemplén-mountains which has one of the wildest forests in Hungary, with many natural sights.
Nearest airport: Budapest Airport (BUD) – Liszt Ferenc International Airport
Trains and buses: Trains depart once in every hour from Budapest Keleti station to Miskolc. From Miskols there will be an organized pick-up to the location of the camp. You can check the timetable here: https://www.mavcsoport.hu/en
Accomodation and food:
IDH Hungary has a Children and Volunteer Center which was built by Volunteers from donations of individuals and companies. The accommodation will be there in big rooms with 6-8 beds. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and towels.
The breakfast and dinner will be served in the Center. There is a bio garden in the village (BioSzentandrás) which will provide the lunch for the volunteers using their own bio products.
Meals: Vegetarian, gluten and lactose free food will be available.
