Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:
Woanders e.V. is a non-profit organization which wants to reach people of all ages, support cross-generational interaction and contact between people from different areas of life. Their work intends to reduce fear of contact and support tolerance and curiosity for other people, by strengthening the team-spirit “We”. Each summer for over a
month, they organize a camping village full of activities for different age groups: This workcamp starts with a week of camping for children (07-12 years old), which is followed by a week for families.The last week of the project is dedicated to dismantling the whole area, because the summer is ending.
(Before this workcamp the program started with another 3 weeks of divers program for children and teenagers. The first group of volunteers is staying until 3rd of August and will help in facilitating your arrival phase.)
You can find the camp village schedule here:
www.woanders.org/zeltstadt/
Participants usually stay there for a full week, most of them will stay overnight in tents
and have their meals there as well. It is a project aimed mostly towards children and teens with fewer opportunities but it is open to people from all backgrounds. Priority is given to participants from nearby communities. Since 2020 we successfully support this project with small groups of international volunteers and the local team is looking forward to meet new international friends. By volunteering in this project, you are contributing to a sustainable and inclusive community (UN SDG 11).
Description of work:
Come and volunteer in a summer village for different (age) groups! 3 weeks of various activities await you while you assist in a summer camp for children and young families near Cologne! The summer village officially opens on the 13th of July and several weeks of program for children and teenagers have already happened when your camp starts. Your project starts with the arrival of a children group aged 7 to 12 (KidZ 4.-9.8.) and a week full of activities with and for the young participants. Your job will be to help with different types of workshops, where the children can try out different types of sport, creative activities, do arts and crafting or simply chill or play games. The second week (GenerationZ 11.-16.8.) is dedicated to families and presents a mix of generations from parents to small children and everything in between.
In the last days your job will be helping with the dismantling of the infrastructure, which gets stored away until the next year.
Aside from helping with the program, there will also be “backstage” tasks, such as taking shifts in the “bar” or cleaning the sanitary facilities. Another responsibility is the night duty: Since the participants are under-age, someone always needs to stay awake. Don’t worry, you won’t need to stay up the whole night and you won’t need to do it alone. It can easily turn into a nice long campfire-evening with friends. It is very important to the local team that you feel and become part of one big group of teamers.
Description of location and leisure:
The camp village is situated on a meadow surrounded by trees a bit outside of the town of Bergheim. In Bergheim, you can find different shops and cafés, and Bergheim itself is only 20km away from Cologne. On your days off you can therefore visit Cologne, which is the fourth most populous city of Germany, famous for its cathedral and the Roman-Germanic museum. You can also go on trips to other nearby towns, for example to Bonn.
The nearest airport: QKL in Koeln (Koln/Cologne),Germany
The nearest terminal (train-, bus-, taxi station): Cologne, Düsseldorf or Bonn
Meeting Point and Time: You have to arrive in Paffendorf train station. Please check for connections from anywhere to Paffendorf www.bahn.com/en. From there it is only a 15 minute walk to the camp village. There will be someone waiting to accompany you.
Description of accommodation and food:
You will sleep in big group tents on the camp village site. Camp mats will be provided, but please bring your own sleeping bag! There are showers and sanitary facilities available, but the accommodation itself is quite basic. There will be no need for cooking since you will be eating together with the local team and the participants, so everything will be provided, but of course it is expected that you may help with cleaning and so on. You can get a glimpse of the project area on the homepage of the association, where you can find pictures from the previous years: https://www.woanders.org/fotos/

Short remarks for the project:
This is a special project for nature lovers and people interested in nature protection work. Sturdy work shoes and clothing as well as sun and rain protection are required. Please note that because the area is quite remote, it’s not easily accessible, so the number of excursions and outside trips will be limited.
PROJECT: The town of Heilsbronn has been hosting workcamps for 13 years already and is looking forward to welcoming another international group of volunteers this summer. The local community is a big fan of workcamps and international volunteering and has introduced other neighbouring cities to the workcamp idea as well. This year, your support will help the community maintain, renovate and extend its infrastructure (UN SDG 11 sustainable communities).
WORK: The municipality of Heilsbronn is counting on the help of international volunteers to maintain and renovate parts of the town’s infrastructure. For this year, two projects are in discussion:
Maintain a fitness trail in the forest, called ‘’Vita Parcours’. To keep the fitness trail practicable for visitors, you will clear the trail of over-grow plants along the paths and on different stations. You will also help to clean the signs and stations, as well as help to pick up left-over trash along the way.
Renovate a ‘’barefoot path’’. A barefoot path is a short way, where people can walk on barefoot, to experience different sensations. One part of it is made with pebbles, another with moss, another one with pine cones… etc. The barefoot paths in Heilsbronn are loved by kids and families and they need to be renovated regularly.
You will help emptying and refilling the different parts of the path.
Others projects might also be added. In case, you should expect working outside with municipal workers, doing renovation or construction works. The work will be led by a professional instructor from the builder’s yard, so no previous experience is needed. You will work 30 hours per week, somewhere between 8am to 4pm from Monday to Friday with lunchbreak on site.
LOCATION: Heilsbronn is a town of 9,300 inhabitants, located in the idyllic Bavarian region called Franken (Franconia). Because Heilsbronn is situated on one of the paths leading to the famous pilgrimage city Santiago de Compostela in Spain, it is frequently visited by tourists as well as pilgrims.
But Heilsbronn city centre also has a lot to offer! Supermarkets, different shops, pubs, youth centre, a barbecue area, and other infrastructure. There, you will find traditional half-timbered houses and some unique sites, such as ‘’Heilsbronn ABBEY’’, a cistercian monastery and local cathedral, both built in the 12th century.
A guided tour might be organised for you if you are interested. Besides, the town can arrange free entrance to the outdoor swimming pool for your group. Nature-lovers can find several hiking trails in the beautiful surrounding landscape. The worth-seing cities of Nuremberg, Bamberg and Rothenburg are not too far away and might be visited on weekends, using public transportation.
MEETING POINT AND TIME: Please, try and arrive at Heilsbronn train station between 1pm and 7pm on July 21. Find the best connection on the German railway company’s website: https://www.bahn.com/en
NEXT TRAIN STATION: Heilsbronn (20mn walk from the accommodation). Attention: please do not get mixed up with another German city called Heilbronn (same but without an s). This one is more than 2 hours away from Heilsbronn!
NEXT INTERNATIONAL TRAIN STATIONS: Nuremberg – around 25min away from Heilsbronn with the train.
NEXT AIRPORT: Nuremberg (NUE), Stuttgart (STR), Frankfurt (FRAU). From Nuremberg airport it takes 45mn, from Stuttgart airport 2h45 and from Frankfurt 3h30 to reach heilsbronn by train.
ACCOMODATION: You will be accommodated in the local youth club called ‘’JUZ’’, there are two big rooms and one small room where you will sleep on camp beds or on mattresses on the floor. Please bring a sleeping bag! There is a small kitchen, a common room with sofas and games for you to chill, two toilets and one bathroom. In addition in the house, there is a washing machine and Wifi connection. The local youth who usually visit the club are looking forward to welcoming you and getting to know international volunteers.
Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.

PROJECT: It is the 14th time that the community of Lauterbach and a local Landscape Development Association invite an internaitonal workcamp! Above all, the local hosts are very happy to be supported by a workcamp at different environmental and construction tasks in a nature protected area! Not only is your help valuable to them but they are also very happy to share their knowledge about forest preservation to foreign volunteers. By volunteering in this project, you are actively protecting nature and biodiversity (UN SDG 15).
WORK: Help the community of Lauterbach take care of its beautiful forest and of its wildlife-rich open land! Lauterbach has many nature conservation areas to offer and your valuable help is needed for various conservation tasks.
During this workcamp you will be working in the forest and open land and you will help the municipality to maintain the diverse landscape. Your tasks:
• Maintaining a wet meadow as a habitat for rare species of flora and fauna. This involves removing mown material from the meadow by hand;
• removal of woody plants from the forest moor biotopes with tree-trimmers and saws;
• maintenance of beautiful hiking trails, so that everyone can enjoy the great landscape as well;
• removal of so-called "neophytes" (invasive non-native vegetation) from protected areas, as they threaten native biodiversity;
• you may also repair fences and maintain ecologically valuable grassland areas, supporting our local graziers.
Be prepared for hard physical work! Due to working in swampy (boggy) and steep areas, rubber boots and/or sturdy shoes are required for effective work! The work will be led by a professional instructor, so no previous experience is needed. You will work around 30 hours per week, somewhere between 8am to 3pm from Monday to Friday with a lunchbreak.
LOCATION: Lauterbach is situated in the heart of the Black Forest nature park, close to the towns of Schramberg and Rottweil. You will have many possibilities to hike and experience nature first hand. Just step out the door and find yourself surrounded by beautiful landscapes! In your free time, you will have the possibility to go to the swimming or to visit cities like Rottweil or Freiburg.
Next train station: Hausach
Next international train stations: Stuttgart (2 to 2,5 from Stuttgart main station to Hausach) or in Switzerland: Basel (about 2 hours from Basel train station to Hausach) or in France: Strasbourg (1 to 1,5 hours from Strasbourg train station to Hausach)
Next airports (in case you really need to take a flight): Stuttgart (STR), Strasbourg (SXB), Basel (BSL)
MEETING POINT AND TIME: On July 15, there will be pickups from Hausach train station in the afternoon. The exact times of the pickups will be given in the specific infosheet. Find the best connection to Hausach on the German railway company's website: https://www.bahn.com/en
ACCOMMODATION: You will stay in a nice community house in the middle of the forest, called "Mosenmättle Guest House". There, you will find sanitary facilities, showers, a common room with sofas and tables and a well-equipped kitchen for you to use. You will sleep in 4 multi-bed rooms (with bunkbeds). As the house is located in a very rural area, the internet access and mobile phone coverage will most probably be limited. Just be prepared to spend two wonderful, adventurous weeks away from your busy and usual everyday life. Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.

PROJECT: Schwarzerden is a small village with 430 inhabitants and already experienced in welcoming international volunteers. After five successful international IBG workcamps, they again invite a group of volunteers to support them to improve the local infrastructure and to enrich the village festival on July 13th to 15th. The previous camps have always been a big fun for the volunteers and the locals. WORK: Build a wooden hut together with local youth as their meeting point. The main task of the workcamp in 2019 will be to build a wooden hut which will allow the local youth to meet in a public place without disturbing others. The local youth will work together with you. Besides this, you will improve the surrounding of your accommodation. This will include landscape gardening and renovation work. Some other smaller tasks to improve the community infrastructure will be added. The group of volunteers will split up in the two different tasks every day. You might be asked to support the local festival team.
The workcamp will take place in Schwarzerden. The village has a pub and a very small little shop (open only in the mornings). The village belongs to the local community of Freisen, together with 7 other villages. Freisen is situated in a 4km distance in the north of Saarland in a rural area. You can find many interesting places in Freisen: a historical railway, cultural and natural sights, a small zoo, a public swimming pool (a 3km walk from the accommodation). The local villagers are already looking forward to get to know you and to welcome you at the local village festival. The villagers will do their best to support some excursions by organising the transport (maybe to the famous sights of Trier or to IdarOberstein, the German centre of gemstones). But this cannot be guaranteed yet. The project is perfect for volunteers who enjoy being outside and in nature.
NEXT AIRPORTS: Saarbruecken (SCN), Frankfurt (FRA)
NEXT TRAIN STATION: St.Wendel (before 20.25 pm)
NEXT BUS STOP: Bahnhof, Schwarzerden
The accommodation provided is the former centre of the sports club of Schwarzerden. It is now in public use for bigger events in this village. You will have a separate kitchen and a hall for sleeping (camping beds provided) and eating. There is also an outdoor place which you can use for eating and in the evening if the weather is fine. All necessary facilities are provided (showers, even a washing machine) but there is no public internet. Attention: This place is quite isolated; the village of Schwarzerden is 1km away. Next to the accommodation you can find the sports ground, you can use it whenever you want. You will have a beautiful view over the valley; you will be surrounded by forests and meadows. Just enjoy nature, go for a hike to visit a castle….

PROJECT: The community of Lauchringen is going to host an international workcamp for the very first time – and they are very much looking forward to it. The project will take place in cooperation with the “Familienzentrum” (family centre), an organisation that offers various programs for people of all ages to meet, exchange and educate themselves.
WORK: At the outskirts of the town, the family centre of Lauchringen built an “Adventure Land”: A big house with sleeping facilities, a kitchen, sanitary facilities, a workshop space and a big common room. This place is going to host groups during school holidays and offer an afternoon program for children and youngsters.
The building itself will be finished in March; however, your help is needed to shape the garden area around it! You might help create a play area with water, stone, and sand: Build a small hill; from its top, a small stream will flow down and find its way through sand and stones. Not only your helping hands, but also your creativity is welcome for this task! Besides, there are many more small projects, for example, set up wooden elements to hide a steel fence.
Apart from these tasks, you will help maintain the local stream: Lots of weed is growing next to the stream, and your support in removing it is very much appreciated!
Lauchringen is a small and pretty town in the very South of the Black Forest. It is just a stone’s throw away from the Swiss border and not far from places like Lake Constance and the university town of Freiburg. Lauchringen itself offers everything you need: shopping facilities, cafés, bars and much more.
NEXT AIRPORTS: Stuttgart, Karlsruhe (Baden-Baden)
NEXT TRAIN STATION: Lauchringen
You will be accommodated in the “Adventure Land” itself – as the very first group to stay in the new building! There are two rooms with sleeping mats, a kitchen, and sanitary facilities – everything you need.
Have a look at pictures of the new building here: http://faz-hochrhein.de/abenteuerland/category/blog/
