Work: Volunteers will have environmental tasks in different areas in the East, for example cleaning the coastline, planting trees and flowers, taking down old fences, removing lupines or other plants and fixing hiking paths. In the North we will have different kind of tasks. Some days we will focus on renovation, painting, cleaning and fixing things around the WF house. The house is around 500 m2 and through the years the volunteers have been making beautiful drawings and paintings on the wall of the house. We will continue with that art work and also, we will make sculptures out of drifted wood. We will clean the coastline in the north near to the arctic circle.

Our work will also depend on weather conditions, which is why we have to be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, but hopefully, the weather will be nice most of the time. This is a perfect camp for people who like outdoor work and physical challenges. Working hours are about 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Project and location: This camp will take place in two villages – Stodvarfjordur in the East and Raufarhofn in the North of Iceland.

Stodvarfjordur: Scoured by Ice Age glaciers, the dramatic east coast boasts long, narrow fjords with steep sides and jagged peaks which contrast with inland fertile farmlands. Natural harbours depict postcard-like fishing villages and seemingly never-ending roads cross the region, providing beautiful views.

“Fjarðabyggð" is an association of villages in the Eastern fjords of Iceland. It includes the towns of Eskifjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Mjóifjörður, Neskaupstaður, Reyðarfjörður, Breiðdalsvík and Stöðvarfjörður, all tiny fishing villages with steep mountains towering just behind the houses. In this area you will see some of the features that make Iceland a unique place in the world: spectacular fjords with a rich sea life, a great variety of birdlife and countless breathtaking hiking paths. You will explore the area during your stay in the east.

Raufarhofn: The village of Raufarhöfn is the community that lies farthest north in Iceland. It is located in the eastern part of Melrakkasletta close to the Arctic Circle. The population of Raufarhöfn is about 200 and most of the people there earn their living from fishing and fish processing. The harbor is very beautiful and partly shaped by nature itself. A wide and untouched open area surrounds the village with a lot of birds and varied vegetation. In summer one will observe wild migratory birds within the village being a part of the village life with the villagers most often waking up in the morning to the songs of birds. The coastline with its inlets and creeks is filled with driftwood and reaches out into the Arctic Sea. Away and on the surface of the sea various sea-birds will be spotted and an occasional seal. On the beach waders strut and inland on the grassy moorlands there are dozens of lakes filled with trout. In the vicinity many species of ducks, waders and species that favor heaths and moorlands may be observed.

Accommodation and food: Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in the WF houses in Stodvarfjordur and Raufarhofn. The houses are almost 500 m2 with 7 dormitories, big living room and another smaller one, fully equipped kitchen, showers and toilets. Beds are provided; however, volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags or borrow one from WF if they don’t want to bring it. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.
Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home!

WF Iceland will organise reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

This workcamp gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues and intercultural learning.

Work: We will do a survey for a monitoring of marine litter in several places on the coastline and along rivers.
We will clean up plastic in certain areas (position recorded by GPS on our “CUC map“) in different parts of Iceland and classify it in a standard form. We will make photos of the areas where the cleaning will take place.
This project provides us the standard methodology needed to produce some serious data. At the end, we will create a scientific data useful to know more about the plastic pollution in the oceans and on the coastline.
We will also make clean up activities in some protected areas and in other places along the ring road of Iceland. During those activities we will involve local people and visitors in our work.

Project: During this workcamp the volunteers will travel around Iceland. In 2018 Veraldarvinir – Worldwide friends Iceland will make a campaign in Iceland to reduce the use of plastic and encourage people to recycle. The focus in many of our camps will be on the following issues
1. Visiting primary schools and kindergartens to give the youngsters basic lessons about why it is needed to reduce the use of plastic and the importance of recycling.
2. Clean up the coastline and rivers
3. Clean up activities around Iceland were the priority is given to protected areas

Plastic is produced from non-renewable resources, it is essentially indestructible, and yet it is used and thrown away with reckless abandon. A lot of it ends up in the ocean, where it pollutes the water and harm marine life; the rest is burned or buried. Plastic in the marine environment contribute to an estimated 100,000 marine mammal deaths per year. It creates a risk of entanglement and turtles and whales have been found to eat it. Plastic is also problematic for humans as, over time in the marine environment, it degrades into micro-plastic which attract persistent organic pollutants and enter the food-chain once it has been consumed by fish.

During the camp we will drive over 1.400 km in a circle around the whole island. During the travel we will also have a chance to visit some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Some of these are unique Icelandic sights such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, geysirs, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs.

The group will be staying in community centres and in tents, depending on the location each time.
The food will be provided for the duration of the work camp and everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking/cleaning. It would be nice to share new and different dishes, so please remember to bring along recipes from your own countries.

There is an extra participation fee of EUR 480– This fee covers also the transportation and extra accommodation costs of a full trip around Iceland, a total driving distance of nearly 1.400 km over several days. This travel required in order to effectively carry out the study/visit program of the workcamp.

Leisure time: We will have a free entrance to the swimming pools. This camp is also “On the move” so you will travel a lot during the camp and see beautiful places.
