Work: Volunteers will help keep the festival area clean. They will work 4 to 5 hours a day, after which they will have free time enjoy this amazing festival, which is number one in Iceland when it comes to culture and music.

Project and location: For thirteen years we have been doing this project and it has been one of the highlights each year. If you want to see the most famous or up-and-coming musicians in Iceland, then this is the camp for you.

The Westman Islands consist of a group of fifteen islands, which are situated within a short distance off the south coast of Iceland. They are named after the Nordic settlers in the country, namely the Irish, which is why they are called the "westmen" (the men from the west). All islands were created in submarine volcanic eruptions during a comparatively recent geological time period. The colourful town, the beautiful bird cliffs, the new lava and volcanoes and the landscape in general give the islands a scenic interest as varied in character as any in the country. Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island in the group and Iceland´s longest off-shore island with an area of 13.4 km2. Fishing, fish processing and subsidiary trades are the main source of income. Heimaey is sheltered in the north by low mountains and the imposing birdlife of Heimaklettur, which protects the narrow cove at the end of which the harbour lies.

The festival: On the first weekend of August, Icelanders celebrate the 1874 grant of Icelandic sovereignty with a huge festival in the town on Heimaey. The celebration takes place in a tent city in Herjolfsdalur, west of the town, where an extended weekend of bonfires, dance and song takes place with the most famous bands in Iceland entertaining the guests. This festival is the most popular one in Iceland.

Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik, Iceland. The meeting point is at 08.30 am at the first day of the camp in Tjarnargata 11 which is the city hall of Reykjavik

Accommodation and food: Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in a community centre in Heimaey, offering basic facilities. Participants are asked to bring their own warm sleeping bags and mats.

Food will be provided for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home!

The village of Raufarhofn is the community that lies farthest north in Iceland. It is located in the eastern part of Melrakkasletta close to the Arctic Circle. The population of Raufarhofn is about 200 and most of the people there earn their living from fishing and fish processing. The harbor is very beautiful and partly shaped by nature itself. A wide and untouched open area surrounds the village with a lot of birds and varied vegetation. In summer one will observe wild migratory birds within the village being a part of the village life with the villagers most often waking up in the morning to the songs of birds. The coastline with its inlets and creeks is filled with driftwood and reaches out into the Arctic Sea. Away and on the surface of the sea various sea-birds will be spotted and an occasional seal. On the beach waders strut and inland on the grassy moorlands there are dozens of lakes filled with trout. In the vicinity many species of ducks, waders and species that favor heaths and moorlands may be observed.Additional information: There is an extra participation fee of 450 euros for this workcamp. The fee includes the trip from Reykjavik to Raufarhofn and back again which is almost 1,600 km in total and takes 2 or even 3 full days (the first day of the camp and the last one). On the way to the camp, we will drive through the south to the east of the island. After the camp, we will drive through the north and west to Reykjavik (if road conditions are favourable). This trip includes several stops where you will discover unique Icelandic sights, such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava fields, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs.

It can be a presentation, a game, theatre i the form of introduction is up to you Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers. If you like photography, having an amazing time with friends from all over the world and the Northern lights, this camp will suit you perfectly. We will be on the lookout for Aurora borealis at night throughout the whole camp, so you will have the opportunity to take photos of this amazing and unique phenomenon. It is very important to bring your camera with you (only cameras that work in long exposure will catch those lights), so don t forget your tripod and camera. The photos will be of your personal use, but we will also keep the best photos and use them in our brochures, on the website and on social media.

Description of accomodation and food:

Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in the WF house in Raufarhofn. The house is almost 450 m2 with several dormitories, two big living rooms, fully equipped kitchen, three showers and three toilets. Beds are provided; however, volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags or borrow one from WF if they don t want to bring it. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from homePlease keep in mind that usually we have around 10 to 15 international volunteers in the house at the same time

Description of the partner organizing/hosting the project:

The village of Raufarhofn is the community that lies farthest north in Iceland. It is located in the eastern part of Melrakkasletta close to the Arctic Circle. The population of Raufarhofn is about 200 and most of the people there earn their living from fishing and fish processing. The harbor is very beautiful and partly shaped by nature itself. A wide and untouched open area surrounds the village with a lot of birds and varied vegetation. In summer you will observe wild migratory birds within the village being a part of the village life with the villagers most often waking up in the morning to the songs of birds. The coastline with its inlets and creeks is filled with driftwood and reaches out into the Arctic Sea. Away and on the surface of the sea various sea-birds will be spotted and an occasional seal. On the beach waders strut and inland on the grassy moorlands there are dozens of lakes filled with trout. In the vicinity many species of ducks, waders and species that favor heaths and moorlands may be observed. Near to the village you can find the Arctic Henge which is a peculiar thing. Additional information: There is an extra participation fee of 450 euros for this workcamp. The fee includes the trip from Reykjavik to Raufarhofn and back again which is almost 1,600 km in total and takes 2 or even 3 full days (the first day of the camp and the last one). You will travel with a Jeep because of the difficult road situation in the North. On the way to the camp, we will drive through the south to the east of the island. After the camp, we will drive through the north and west to Reykjavik (if road conditions are favourable). This trip includes several stops where you will discover unique Icelandic sights, such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava fields, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs.

Description of work:

During this workcamp, volunteers will deal with different tasks related to renovation and maintenance of our house in Raufarhofn in the North of Iceland. The work will depend on the skills and knowledge of each volunteer, but focuses mainly on tasks such as painting, cleaning, fixing small things, and does not require basic knowledge of carpentry or construction. During winter in Iceland the accommodations are prepared for the summer. This camp is extremely important for us and for our summer volunteers. If the weather conditions are good, we will also help the local community with various kind of environmental work. In addition to the work, winter in Iceland also means AURORA HUNTING. If you like photography, having an amazing time with friends from all over the world and the Northern lights, this camp will suit you perfectly. We will be on the lookout for Aurora borealis at night throughout the whole camp, so you will have the opportunity to take photos of this amazing and unique phenomenon. It is very important to bring your camera with you (only cameras that work in long exposure will catch those lights), so don t forget your tripod and camera. The photos will be of your personal use, but we will also keep the best photos and use them in our brochures, on the website and on social media.

Volunteers will help keep the festival area clean. They will work 4 to 5 hours a day, after which they will have free time enjoy this amazing festival, which is number one in Iceland when it comes to culture and music.

This is the tvelwed time that we host this project and it has been one of the highlights each year. If you want to see the most famous or up-and-coming musicians in Iceland, then this is the camp for you.

The Westman Islands consist of a group of fifteen islands, which are situated within a short distance off the south coast of Iceland. They are named after the Nordic settlers in the country, namely the Irish, which is why they are called the "westmen" (the men from the west). All islands were created in submarine volcanic eruptions during a comparatively recent geological time period. The colourful town, the beautiful bird cliffs, the new lava and volcanoes and the landscape in general give the islands a scenic interest as varied in character as any in the country. Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island in the group and Iceland´s longest off-shore island with an area of 13.4 km2. Fishing, fish processing and subsidiary trades are the main source of income. Heimaey is sheltered in the north by low mountains and the imposing birdlife of Heimaklettur, which protects the narrow cove at the end of which the harbour lies.

The festival: On the first weekend of August, Icelanders celebrate the 1874 grant of Icelandic sovereignty with a huge festival in the town on Heimaey. The celebration takes place in a tent city in Herjolfsdalur, west of the town, where an extended weekend of bonfires, dance and song takes place with the most famous bands in Iceland entertaining the guests. This festival is the most popular one in Iceland.

Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik, Iceland. WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to the camp and back for 110 euros, which includes the Golden Circle South Iceland excursion and the ferry trip to the island.

Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in a community centre in Heimaey, offering basic facilities. Participants are asked to bring their own warm sleeping bags and mats.

Food will be provided for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home!
