The camp project is supervised by a steering group including:
    • The Association of people from the island of Mandø
    • Wadden Sea National Park
    • The Municipality of Esbjerg
    • The Danish Agency for Nature
    • The Danish Fund for Nature.

The Wadden Sea National Park was established in 2010 and is Denmark's biggest national park (1459 km2). The aim is to conserve, protect and strengthen the natural and cultural-historical values of the area and support a sustainable development, which can be beneficial for guests, local development and the local population. The Wadden Sea National Park is born into the trilateral collaboration with Denmark, Germany and Netherlands to protect the Wadden Sea.
The Wadden Sea is also UNESCO World Heritage – world heritage shared between Denmark, Germany and Netherlands - stretching over 500 km from Ho (Denmark) in the north to Den Helder (Netherlands) in the south.

The island of Mandø (8 km2) is located in the middle of the Wadden Sea in Denmark and the highest point (the dunes) is 12 m above the sea. It is a unique island with 30 local inhabitants and some tourists, mainly day-trippers, during summer, autumn and spring.
There are no bridges or ferries to the island, instead, you can drive by bicycle, car or tractor two times a day, when the tide is right.

People on Mandø are very active. They live in the village of Mandø and have organized themselves into local associations which aim for protecting the natural and cultural values of the island of Mandø as well securing workplaces, setting up local events and activities for the local population, visitors and tourists. On the island of Mandø, you will find a café, a bed & breakfast, a (small) camping site, an inn, a small hostel, some summer bungalows, a few farms, a church, a museum, a small grocery and open, friendly people, who are used to do things together and help each other. You can walk around the island in 1,5-2 hours.

The job consists of different activities:

    • To cut down and remove bushes and smaller trees on the island (camping site, dykes, fields etc)
    • To collect garbage on the dykes and on land
    • To assist the local association to clean up the first floor on Brugsen (small grocery store) and prepare it for renovation
    • And if time is right, depends on the weather, to post signs along routes and paths around the island

The job is mainly outside in all kinds of weather.

    ORGANIZATION
Himmelstorm Festival is a small 3-day music festival hold by the eco-village Dyssekilde. It is located in Northwestern Zealand in the countryside next to a small village called Torup, Torup has only about 1000 inhabitants, and the festival has even less participants.
The community of Dyssekilde is built in early 90’es with strong ideas and principles of ecology and sustainability. All houses, toilets, everyday wares, and ways of heating the houses are organic and sustainable. The community even has their own windmill to power their houses.
The festival itself is built on the same principles as the community, for instance; only organic food and beer from the local brewery are served. Everything from theatre, handcrafts, general intimacy and colours and vitality are valued at the festival. Thus, the festival is considered a family and children friendly place to be.

ORGANIZATION: Brenderup Højskole hosts the camp. In English we call ourselves for the Academy for Intercultural Learning. Brenderup Højskole is working as a boarding school with an international approach and accept both Danish and foreign students. You need to be more than 18 years old.
You can read more about the school here: http://www.brenderuphojskole.dk/filer/english.htm

For the last many years, Brenderup have hosted work camps that have supported the building process of Brenderup environmental friendly buildings.
    - We have made the straw bale house, a big culture and music hall.
    - We have made the ellipse-shaped “lotus house”, which is functioning as a workshop for outdoor living activities.
    - The treetop shelter was made for people who want to sleep outside in the night.
    - The “climb around the world” boulder climbing walls.
    - A historic and cultural play park.
    - An organic fitness center in our garden was made, where nature is used instead of artificial machine equipment.
    - We have completed an artistic brick laying camp, where we were decorating a rather big yard with old Celtic sings and patterns. We also did work with city gardening.
    - Last year we incorporate former year’s ideas and concept – building sustainable. We call it our Off-Grid House. The off-grid house has been built during the last year It is a house which is producing – everything – all energy -within its own walls.
    - Last year we also decorated and made paths in our garden between all our sustainable houses,

    WORK:
    1. In the middle of our ‘’park garden’’ we have allocated an area for organic gardening/perma culture. SA, -you should expect to be outside every day and work with garden tools building up parts of the area. It could be by making raised beds for herbs and flowers. Water channels for watering, digging a chamber in the ground for keeping vegetables during winter. Natural shade for plants and people. Etc. THEREFORE, it is garden work - all done by an environmental way, using nature, for the nature! The area of the new ‘organic herb world’ is approximately 1000 square meters.
    2. Being very aware, green and organic in our thoughts and talks, we will also like upgrade our way of dividing garbage in the practical world. Together we will make an area with signboards and areas for dumping different garbage. ‘
    3. We have a lot of bicycles and during camp we will make a shelter to keep them safe and away from rain.
    4. Smart finish and possible artwork at the ‘’Off Grid House

During camp, we will take time to debate sustainability - not only as an environmental issue but also on all levels - including sustainability among people and cultures.
