BACKGROUND:
San Miniato is a small picturesque town in Tuscany with typical Tuscan landscape and beautiful ancient town centre, in the middle between Florence and Pisa. The town belongs to “Cittàslow” international network and promotes slowness and typicality as good way of living: visitors here can enjoy artistic and natural beauties, a quiet and natural hospitality. San Miniato is also a “Town of Flavours”: its wines, extra-vergin olive oil, norcineria (pork butchery), white truffle and several other products give access to a variety of tastes and flavours.
Among the cultural and historical heritage of the town there are “vicoli carbonari” – medieval pedestrian paths that run along the ancient walls into the heart of the historic centre. Over the centuries these paths were frequently used as a connection between the centre and the countryside by coalmen, peasants and shepherds but after the 1950’s they were abandoned and disappeared under gardens and spontaneous vegetation. In the 2010 the active citizens founded the voluntary association “Moti carbonari, ritrovare la strada” aimed to recover and rediscover the beauty of these pathways and transform it into a touristic attraction. Since then several segments of the trail were cleaned up and several events take place on the site. This year the first international workcamp will be organized to help with cleaning and maintenance work of one of the paths.
WORK:
The volunteers will be doing cleaning and maintenance work of one section of the path. There is overlying vegetation and weed to be cut off, some garbage to be cleaned. The work will be done in cooperation with the local voluntary organisation and under the supervision of technical leader.
LOCATION & LEISURE:
San Miniato offers a variety of things to see and to do. On the free day you may also visit Florence or Pisa that are 40 minutes away.
