    Project
    Hiiumaa according to the Nordic sagas emerged from the Baltic Sea as a small islet more than 10 000 years ago. The island of Hiiumaa was first mentioned in historical documents as a deserted island called Dageida in 1228. The first inhabitants settled down at the end of the 13th century. Nowadays Hiiumaa is the second biggest island of Estonia with the area of 965 sq. km and the population around 10 000. It has many historical and nature sights, and there are kind people known for their hospitality and good sense of humor. The island is referred as a remote area of Europe, so EstYES feels particularly proud developing international voluntary projects for 20 years there. Also, for years EstYES has been cooperating with farms all over Estonia for solidarity, respect and practical support to local people who work in agricultural sector keeping traditional life style and developing new eco-farming despite of all difficulties. Lepaniidi Farm on Hiiumaa Island is one of such projects. This is an organic farm promoting sustainable lifestyle, and camp is proposed for volunteers who appreciate and share its values, want to learn more about it and to help hard working people.

    Work
    Lepaniidi Farm has currently about 150 sheep for producing meet and wool, 40 goats 20 of whom are for milk and goat cheese production. Volunteers will be helping grazing, feeding, milking the goats, processing the milk, but also picking berries and vegetables. So, in the mornings there will be goats milking, at days - picking the berries and fruits (strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrant) and making a jam/juice or there will be work in vegetable garden, removing weeds, picking vegetables, etc. During the autumn shift volunteers will be mainly picking up and sorting vegetables (potatoes, carrots, beetroots), milking goats and making cheese. Participants will have a great chance to get familiar with various farm jobs and even to learn how to make goat cheese! Inside of the house it would be grat to give some hand too etc. cooking and cleaning around.The working day will be 6-7 hours, 5-6 days a week (NB! milking is every day). Work will be supervised by local hosts with whom volunteers will stay sharing work and leisure as a family.

    Terminal
    Airport, harbour, bus station in Tallinn. From the airport bus nr 2 and tram nr 4 going to the city centre stops by the Tallinn Bus Station. From there two times per day buses take you straight to Hiiumaa (including ferry transportation from the mainland). Timetables are available online at www.tpilet.ee


    ● 숙박

    The accommodation conditions at the farm will be simple - in old sauna house or caravan, however on beds. Please bring your sleeping bag. Toilets and showers are available in the main house; there is also traditional Estonian sauna in the farm. There is a kitchen with necessary equipment for cooking, which volunteers may use freely – just like at home. Usually volunteers will have breakfasts and lunch together with farmers cooked and served by the hosts, but you always can help with cooking. Dinners will be prepared on their own.

Alliksaare Farm on Hiiumaa Island is one of such projects. Alliksaare Farm has an important task taking care of coastal meadows which are international birds’ migration area under protection of NATURA Program.     Work
    Alliksaare Farm’s main direction is horses and cattle farming. At the moment there are over 70 horses and around 100 cows on the farm. Generally, the work will be to take care and maintain the pastures located by the sea - clearing around the pastures, building or removing fences, repairing fences. Another work is cleaning the coast nearby the farm from rubbish brought by storms. There can be some work for preparing food for cows and horses for winter time. You can work also with horses, take care of them and together with the host train horses. If you know how to ride and know more about horses it is possible to go on trail rides and work with horses more. If you want to learn how to ride there is a possibility as well. There are young and older horses so it’s possible to learn how to take care and train horse of any age, starting from training foals how to walk on the lead rope and getting them to trust humans as well as riding some troubled horses or training horses to ride under saddle or front of the carriage. The work will be mainly outdoors. Working time is 6-8 hours a day. Work will be done under the supervision of the host as well as independently.

    Leisure time
    There are a lot of interesting natural picturesque sights on the island as well as good possibilities for swimming in the sea or hiking in the forest. It is possible to visit other parts of Hiiumaa island on the week-end, which is planned by the host. Hiiumaa offers a lot of various cultural events in summer time and volunteers will have the possibility to join some of them. This camp is perfect for people who enjoy being close to the nature and are interested in traditional way of rural living.

    Sagevere Goat Farm is situated in the tiny village with 18 inhabitants in the middle of Estonia. There has been a farm there since 1841. Now there are 68 adult goats plus baby goats on the farm. The farm also has chickens, rabbits and few lambs. The farm produces goat milk products and different types of breads. This is a lifestyle farm – its goal is not to make a profit but to live close to nature carrying out traditional way of living and farming. This is an organic farm promoting sustainable lifestyle, and this camp is proposed for volunteers who appreciate and share its values, want to learn more about it and to help hard working people in country side.     Work
    The volunteers will help with everyday farm jobs such as milking goats, feeding chickens and rabbits, making cheese, curd, butter, yogurt and traditional bread, taking care of pastures. Other possible tasks are removing manure from the small barn, helping with ongoing building projects of a rabbit hutch and a chicken coop, cleaning the forest around, making firewood, painting and fixing the barns and the house, working on the small farm vegetable field, assisting at the farmer market once a month, helping at the farm store in Viljandi, etc. The volunteers will work 5-6 days a week 5-7 hours a day. Volunteers will be supervised by the hosts.

    Leisure time
    Volunteers can visit Vohma town, which is half an hour away by foot from the farm. The town has few stores, café and all-seasons skating ring (https://www.valgusevabrik.ee/en/skating-rink/). Volunteers can visit large cities like Tartu, Tallinn, Parnu which are about 1,5h away by bus. Since hosts regularly visit nearby cities of Paide, Viljandi, Turi and Poltsamaa volunteers can join them. The nearest swimming place is 14 km away and hosts can take volunteers there. Those who are interested can join the host for fishing. The farm is surrounded by nature, so it is perfect for people who loves it and farm animals.

    Airport, harbour, bus station in Tallinn. From the airport bus nr 2 and tram nr 4 going to the city centre stops by the Tallinn Bus Station. From there you can take a bus to Vohma rist (Kõo Parish, Viljandi County). The bus stop is 2.4 km away from the farm. More info at https://www.tpilet.ee/en/. Alternatively, you can take a train from Ulemiste Station which is 1 km away from the airport to Vohma station. The train station is 3.2 km away from the farm. More info at https://elron.ee/en/. Hosts will pick volunteers up from bus or train station in Vohma.


    ● 숙박

    Volunteers will live on the second floor of the farm hosts house. Although it is in not finished, it is warm and well-lighted. Hosts will provide beds and linens, still it is advisable to bring a sleeping bag. The bathroom and toilet are on the first floor. Hosts will provide meals while volunteers are invited to help cooking. Farm meals based on meat and dairy products. If volunteer has dietary restrictions, solutions can be talked over with the hosts. It is possible to make own suitable meals. Farm has wifi connection.
