PROJECT PROFILE
Khalaba Community Development Group is a self-help group based in Mumias district in the Western Province of Kenya. The group was formed with the aim to improve the educational standards of the orphans and vulnerable children, so that they will be able to take care of themselves. The group is running a local orphanage school, which is visited by 10 orphans and 16 widows. The orphans and widows are being supported through the sales of maize produced from their small farm. This caters for the orphans’ basic needs i.e. food, clothing and shelter. The widows also get support from various groups under the Khalaba Combined Development Group. The main purpose of the group is to mobilize the community and self-help groups to participate in grassroots efforts in poverty eradication.

Project Aims :
- Sensitizing and mobilizing groups in order to identify and solve their needs
- Establishing sustainable initiatives on community education, agriculture, income generation


WORKCAMP ACTIVITIES
- Teaching of Mathematics, English, Creative drawing subjects to the kids
- Feeding programme and assisting with preparation and serving of meals
- Brick making activities and construction extending of the project school.
- Home visits and helping of the old sick group members
- Farmwork which includes planting of crops, digging, watering of plants and clearing of bushes.
- Organizing of sports and games as well as playing with the children.

Project Location : Mumias District, Kakamega County of Kenya

* ARRIVAL AT THE AIRPORT
We will pick up all volunteers taking part in this workcamp from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi. CIVS will arrange accommodation up to three days before and after the workcamp in a host family in the Buruburu area of Nairobi.

Accommodation during the workcamp will be in the project and it is important that you have your own sleeping bag and mat.
During the workcamp, volunteers will get food from locally available foodstuffs. The volunteers will share the responsibility of preparing the food themselves.
In this workcamp, volunteers can visit Lake Victoria at Kisumu City and the Kakamega Rainforest, which are about a 2- and 1-hour drive respectively from the project.

* Volunteers participating in this project will be required to pay 265 Euros. This cost will include :
- Airport pick up upon arrival & Airport drop off after the workcamp
- Up to 3 nights’ accommodation in Nairobi
- Introduction to Kenyan life through a Nairobi City Center Tour before the workcamp
- Workcamp Orientation at the CIVS office in Nairobi or the workcamp site
- Food (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
- Workcamp facilitation and mentoring of volunteers by an experienced workcamp leader
- Certificate of participation for the volunteer
- All administrative costs

* WHAT TO CARRY
Volunteers are required to carry the following items for the workcamp: mosquito net, torch/flashlight, toiletries, first-aid kit, sleeping bag, sandals and sunscreen. In addition to those, volunteers can also carry the following items for interaction purposes: pictures of your country, clothes, toys, books, pens, etc.

[예방접종 안내]
아프리카 동부 및 중남미 지역으로 입국하시는 참가자 분들은 황열병 주사 접종 또는 말라리아약을 복용 하는 것이 좋습니다.황열병 주사는 한국 출발일 최소 15일 전에 접종해야 하고, 말라리아약 또한 사전에 복용해야 효과가 있으며, 국가에 따라 요구되는 예방접종 내용이 상이하니 자세한 사항은 해외여행질병정보센터를 통해 확인 하시기 바랍니다.

SAFARI OPTION
CIVS organizes safaris to all the spectacular National Parks and touristic sites in Kenya, with the main attraction being Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Volunteers who wish to go on a safari should apply at least two weeks before arrival to enable us to make proper arrangements. The fee charged is all-inclusive of meals, transport, park entry, accommodation and tour guiding.

Safari dates : 5th September – 7th September 2018

Charges : 3-day Safari to Maasai Mara National Reserve, 330 Euro
